well.. I am a freshman at Baruch College, I was geared for business and had Finance in mind. But recently, I have been doing research on Law, it looks very appealing to me and y dad and his friends are supporting it as well. So how would I go about getting into law school now.. I'm a freshman so I have yet to take any business courses but I don't know what to do if I want to get into law. What is the procedure? What major, when do you take the Lsat, do you work in between law school and undergrad? I'm completely new to this. Also, if I did do a finance major, would I still be as good for law school? I think normally lawyers are political science majors, right? Oh and if this turns into a "choose which major you want", frankly, I would not be able to.. I'm interested in political science, finance, economics, English, etc. Too many, so please recommend a major you think will gear me for law.

You don’t have to take any particular classes as an undergrad to get into law school. In fact, most law schools would prefer if you weren’t poli sci or some other pre-law type major. Get a good, solid education, good grades, and in the summer before senior year study all the LSAT prep books you can afford. Work experience or leadership in some position will help, but law school admission is basically a numbers game. Find a major you like and can excel in. And keep your options open; you may change your mind in the next few years.

You will need good grades, which is somewhat within your control, and a good LSAT score which is less so. If you get the grades then your LSAT score, when you get it, may turn out to be a big thumbs up or thumbs down on a legal career for you. If people advise you to get a good education to get ready for what life sends your way they aren’t just blowing smoke. You don’t know how you will do on the LSAT and even if you go to a top law school and do very well you don’t know if you would enjoy the practice of law enough to justify the enormous investment of time and money.

As far as what to major in, most majors are fine but some are not. Pre-Law, if it actually exists, would be a very poor choice. Poli sci is ok. Finance, econ and English are better. Math or Science or Classical Languages would be better still because they are known to be strict disciplines that burn off the slackers.

Is your dad a practicing attorney? If he isn’t you might want to consult with some grownups who are.
