Oh my god!! Do I have to pay back the loan now if I dropped below half time level?

Ok, here is my situation.

I got financial aid(Sub. Stafford, Unsub. Stafford, Perkin Loan, and Pell Grant) from my community college. My performance was okay until this semester which I dropped a lot of classes. I was kind of slacked off because I already got an offer to transfer from my CC to one of the UCs.

I went to the financial aid office today and they said I have to pay back some money I got coz my registered units are lower than half time level.(and I have less than 60% of the class time or something.)

I asked them the following questions but they said they dont know. So, any of you guys please please give me some answers.

(1) how much do I have to pay?
(2) and can I pay it as a monthly basis or do I have to pay it in full?
(3) can I defer a payment coz I'm going to transfer to UC this coming fall?
(4) will it affect the financial aid package offered by the UC?
(5) when should i supposed to get a letter from financial aid office about how much do i have to pay back?

Hmm…I’m sure Swimcatsmom will clarify…but I believe your Pell grant is awarded based on your full time/part time status. If you received full time Pell money but did not take a full time courseload, you would not be entitled to keep all of that Pell money, I don’t believe.

The financial aid office at your community college should be able to tell you exactly what you owe.

Also…I know you didn’t ask for this free advice…but slacking off when you’re planning to transfer isn’t a smart idea. You’re lucky that the UC is still taking you.

At our community college we have to report attendance–or non-attendance, and it is for financial aid purposes. I don’t know if all colleges have to do that for federal money, but probably they do.

Each school sets its policies individually for this type of thing, and a return of title IV funds calculation must be done if a student drops classes & it will impact aid. Schools have different policies & some will do return of funds when students drop even a single class. You have to ask YOUR school what THEIR policy is. Asking here won’t tell you what YOU need to know.
