I applied Early Action at OSU and was recently admitted, but I am just wondering if I will get a scholarship or not. Would they mention it on the admissions letter? It seems I am eligible for the National Buckeye and Provost scholarships as I have a 3.9 GPA and a 29 ACT score. Would I be notified separately of those?
Scholarship awards do not come with your admission letter, they come separately. My son received his scholarship letter 8 days after seeing his acceptance on the portal however from other posts on this forum you can see that many others are still waiting for their letters.
Be aware that just because you “qualify” for the National Buckeye out of state scholarship doesn’t mean you will be awarded it. Recently told by Admissions that they have run out of money for this scholarship, so it became a “competitively awarded” scholarship. I.E., they changed the standards to much higher levels for both the ACT and class rankings needed to earn the award for next Fall’s Incoming Freshman. My son qualified for the scholarship based on the 28 ACT and top 40% standards -this was one of the main reasons we considered OSU - but wasn’t awarded the scholarship because his class rank was not in the top 5 - 10% per Admissions. Very disappointed that OSU is taking this “bait and switch” tactic with marketing to out of state students! If you haven’t received notification of the National Buckeye award by now, you didn’t get it.
@CandidMom2 The website clearly states that it is competitive, and the wording specifically for National Buckeye says “Those considered”. I’m sorry you are disappointed and that you think it was a “bait and switch”, but your son has the minimum qualifications and based on these boards alone, there were likely many applicants with higher stats.
FYI - we are in state, so my student does not qualify for this award, but I don’t think it is fair to the university to describe it as underhanded, which is the impression “bait and switch” leaves.
From the website:
Unless otherwise indicated, merit scholarships::
Are awarded on a competitive basis to domestic freshmen admitted to the Columbus campus for autumn semester.
Well said @16ohio. I was typing a similar response. @CandidMon2 I’m sorry your son didn’t get the NBS. I’m sure you and your son are disappointed. I hope being a Buckeye is still an option.
I agree that the website is pretty clear that merit is not automatic. Many public universities do not provide merit scholarships. The fact that OSU does is icing on the cake. It’s an enticement for those with high stats to pick OSU over another school. This may be late advice but when merit/scholarship money is a deciding factor, I think it’s a good idea not to spend the money to travel to the out of state colleges until the merit/scholarship package is known. Then there are no let-downs.
It is good to know that if you haven’t received it yet, you won’t be getting it. Kids can move on.
We had the exact same (devastating) experience with the OSU Buckeye National Scholarship this year. Being told he was “eligible” for Buckeye and Trustee Scholarships (by an actual human in the OSU Admissions office), we assumed that mean he was getting them. Very disappointing to find out there was no merit aid at all this year–same with Miami U. in the case of our son, even though he met criteria for eligibility. Oh well!
