Ok I know there are a billion of these.. but any speculations on my chances?

Hey guys. I applied to Wharton. What do you think my chances are? [Asian Male from Kansas City, Missouri]

GPA: 3.78 Unweighted (I go to a really tough, small, non-religious private school); 4.24 Weighted (We aren't allowed to take over 3 honors/AP classes); Most rigorous courseload possible.

[I also moved from a public Nebraskan school after freshman year to my new school which I attend now. I had a 4.0 both semesters back at Nebraska in freshman year.]

SAT: 800 Math, 720 Verbal, 750 Writing (11 on essay)
SAT IIs: 800 Math 2, 790 Biology

Honors classes: Precalculus, English, French, Physics. AP classess: Calculus, Chemistry.
AP Tests taken: Physics B(5); US History (5) (we only have regular US History class, but it's really comprehensive still); Calculus (5). I will be taking Stats, Literature, French and Chemistry this May.

Extra-Curriculars:
-Varsity Swimming (10,11,12). Captain and State Qualifier, many Letters
-Varsity Water Polo (10,11). Captain
-Drawing/Art (9,10,11,12). Won many regional prizes, many displays in local galleries, designed art for school projects, nationally recognized, had my drawings published in 3 national magazines after sending in my art for consideration)
-Asian Awareness Club (10,11,12). President, organized events
-Math Team (9th grade, when I was at Nebraska) On the state team, which won 1st place at dual meets, our district meet, the regional meet, and took the state title.
-Model UN (10,11,12)
-Community Service (10,11,12) Approximately 100 Hours

Essays were really good, Reccomendations should have been good as well.

What are my chances? And would my Artistic talent & being from missouri be a hook?
Oh, and I won't be getting recruited for water polo or swimming

Why would being from Missouri be a hook?

Missouri's an "I don't know" state. It's not Wyoming, but it's not PA/NJ/NY. I also don't understand the no more than 3 AP thing. This is a private school? You got ripped off.

Art can be good if you have lots of awards to show for it. They might come back asking for a sample. A lot of your chances of getting in depend on how you wrote your app. Did you illustrate what you learned from the community service? Were you able to show achievement or growth from leadership? On the whole, I don't see much that's novel - nearly everyone coming into Penn played a sport, did math or debate, and was in model UN (you should see the IAA intro meetings). Good luck.

he probably meant no more than 3 ap's a year...

those asians never were good at using the engrish

what do you mean by "really tough?"....my hs sent 20% of the senior class to Ivies/Stanford/MIT, is your hs THAT competitive? unless your hs is truly as competitive as you say then not having all A's will hurt, but if you put a lot of effort into the app you can still get in. good luck.

It's unusual for a Wharton aceptee to have nothing related to business on the resume.

completely wrong there ceebrown

they don't expect you to know about business, if you already knew then you wouldn't be looking for a business education.

I attended, both undergrad and grad, my son will attend and I've helped candidates for 25 plus years apply to Wharton. But whatever you kids want to believe!

Most Wharton students have no previous business experience. People on CC seem to think that business classes or ECs (or running one) is a golden ticket, when it's really only as valuable as any other EC (like arts or sports), or even less so, because you may have created misconceptions. Wharton really isn't a business school; it's a wall street school, and a management consulting school, and a large-scale marketing school. HS business experience is usually irrelevant.

I also have to question your claims, ceebrown. Like Matt said, most Wharton students have no prior business exposure before college. You don't need to run a small business or be a member of something like FBLA to get accepted.

What Wharton Wants

This article speaks about some of the more important things admissions looks for. They are more interested in other aspects of an applicant that aren't necessarily related to business. Much like having a perfect SAT, having business EC's won't guarantee acceptance. Even if you look at the old CC threads here (and keep in mind there are quite a few overachievers here at CC), you'll find plenty of people who lacked business EC's and got in and plenty who had the EC's but didn't make the cut.

hey legendofmax,

did you get my PMs?

(sorry to hijack thread)

Ok really. What do you think my chances are on?

ceebrow,
I sent you a PM please check

Reading through the decisions threads from this year and last year, I found that many people accepted to Wharton had few, if any, ECs that directly related to business. On the contrary, many of those who were deferred/rejected seemed to have ECs that clearly related to their interests in business.

On the other hand, most of the Wharton acceptees had ECs that reflected their leadership qualities moreso than their business skills.

Thanks for the input guys. NickBarr, do you think I could get in? is my captain-ing 2 varisty sports & president of a club leadership potential? i did mention in one of my essays what i learned from it, and i'm pretty sure that my essays were really good.

I don't know. Your grades are much better than mine and I got in (albeit I applied Early Decision which seems to boost chances a bit). I think it will boil down to how well you portray yourself and how you will benefit the University of Pennsylvania in your essays

I've done ebay business (korean version: ´ç½ÅÀÌ ã´Â ¸ðµç ½ºÅ¸ÀÏ, ¿Á¼Ç) over the summer and made $12000 approximately by selling nintendo gaming chips.
Would this count as the kind of business experience that you had talked about? and if so, how would I prove that I've done this? perhaps identifying my seller ID?

Ahh! I want someone to speculate on how I will do!

Anyways. I just know that huge-business-y kids have been rejected from Wharton. I think it's because that since there's already so good at business (and make more than some people do right out of college already), then why would you even need Wharton?

i agree with you, chair2, and i dont think you have anything to worry about by not having business experience(:
