OK. So you didn't do too hot on the ACT. . . It's back to work time. What's your COA?

To those who are preparing for the test. How do you understand your mistakes for the reading section?

@A2roxas28
I really can’t answer that question as I don’t really go over reading, but I can give a little advice.

So, I took the act twice: once in june 2011 and again in october 2011. In june I got 30 (32e, 29m, 30r, 28s) without studying. In september I registered for the october act (paid the late fee lol). I had a lot of hw for school so I didn’t really work on act. When I realized it was in a week, a week before, I thought what should I study. I took a practice and got 34e,32m, 30r, and 28s. So I knew that science was too low for my goal of 35 and decided to study science. But I didn’t really study, I actually took about 4 practice tests, including 2 the night before (i got high twenties low thirties on those practices). I went to bed and when I went into the act I thought that I definitely got 34+ on english, but thought I got sub 30 on math, then I went into reading and felt great, when suddenly as I was finishing up the third passage, I heard “five minutes remaining”. I knew I was screwed and panicked (worst move). I didn’t read and I was CONFUSED with the questions looking for key words in the parade and I think I got the while last passage wrong :(. On the science I went in ****ed about reading then proceeded to fly thru everything. I was so happy when I finished with >5 minutes left! so I ended up getting a 32 (32e, 31m, 28r, 35s). To be frank I was disappointed and although I didn’t do perfect I think I did fairly well so now imma offer some tips.

1) do a lot of practice tests! U should take at least 1 the week before the act. That is what really helped me get that 35 in science.

2) study with one friend. I’m taking the act in march and I’ve been studying with my friend and my reading has improved to a 33 (got that yesterday). Just go over all the mistakes on practice tests with ur friend to improve.

3) more practice tests.

4) I’m studying for sat math 1&2 and I took a practice math yesterday after 2 weeks of studying for that and got 35! So I think that the pr sat math 1&2 book could help a lot as it worked for me.

5) I can’t rly offer tips on reading as I’m not so great at that, but I’m taking a lot of tests with my ap lang teacher from last yr and she advised me to take many practice tests. Also watch the time try to do 8 minutes per section.

6) don’t read anything except skim the intro. And… Take practice tests!

7) can’t give any tips on english  don’t know how u would improve I think it’s a matter of luck maybe look at another post for this. Although from the trend seen above, practice tests may help… Lol

Although I’m no perfect scorer, I think that these tips can help anyone and I hope I helped :)

Wow guys! Thanks so much for the advice; it was seriously helpful!

I need to improve 5+ overall points; hopefully your advice will help me get there. :)

I have a question. Am I improving my reading score if I answer all the question correctly, but I did not time myself?

I’d say yes, but now you have to work on pacing yourself.

how the F do u guys do well! HELP…TIPS…BOOKS…GIVE MEE ALL THE INFO U GOT, I GOT A 26 W/O PRACTICE AND IM SHOOTINF FOR A 32, HELP!?

I took the ACT for the first time in February, I took it just to see how it was and wasn’t too concerned about my score. I ended up getting a 24 composite which I expected better considering I am one of the top contenders for Valedictorian at my school. I want to get at least a 30 on the ACT and really want to go to med school. Can anyone give me tips to raise my score to at least a 30?

Eng:20… I was so disappointed in this score
Math:26 There was a lot of trig that we are just now getting to in Precalc on my ACT
Reading:26
Science:25

HELP…Has anyone ever experienced incorrect score reporting on the ACT test. Here is my situation. I took the test in April with a concussion and scored a 30. I wanted to improve my score for scholarships and ED to an IVY. I took it again on September 21 (no concussion and well prepared) and scored a 25. All of the sections were remarkably lower. My english was a 32 the first time and this time around it was a 24. I took a prep class, private tutoring and studied a ton. Could it be that the test they put in for me is not actually my test? It seems impossible with all of my prep that I would go backwards in my score so drastically. I am devastated. Any ideas?

I’m a sophomore and got
C- 22:(
E-23
M- 21
S- 24
R-18 ***?

wow that was the most helpful advice i have ever read!!! i agree, but in Reading it takes up a lot of your time if you read it, read the question, look back at the text, and answer!!!
also when practicing for math just practice the last 20 questions!!!

hey feesix, how did you exactly study for the ACT during that “1 month”? Because I am getting 28’s on my practice tests from the Red ACT book. I am going to be a junior in the coming school year and really would like a 33-34:)

@starchywinky I have Amsco’s ACT Math and Science i get 34s-36s on math but only 26s on science did you feel the science was harder and math easier?
