This has been suggested but no one's really given their input on whether or not it matters to use the older editions of the Chem 130 textbook. It's like such a big savings. Has anyone tried it, heard someone who tried it or see unresolvable conflicts doing this. I know there's the OWL online access, it's $30, which I would buy even if i bought the 9th edition as I would get used anyways.

P.S. I cannot find the 125 textbook: Collaborative Investigations in General Chemistry....if anyone can link from any online store.. thanks

Just got an email from the 130 prof saying that the 8th and 9th edition don’t differ significantly. 8th edition costs around $15 while the 9th/custom u of m edition is over $100. I’m still worried that getting the 8th edition would put me at a disadvantage tho…what should I do :(

Yeah, I saw that the package at Ulrich’s costs $160 so you’d still be saving a lot of money.

I have to ask tho, could someone explain how this class is run? Why isn’t the book important? If you don’t understand something in the lecture, wouldn’t you want a good book to help you out? I’m just kidna worried becasue chemistry isn’t my best subject. I’ll probably end up going with the 8th edition tho :)

YEah the email was sent after i ordered my 9th edition too -.-’ Is there much difference between the 2007 and the 2009 copy if they’re both 9th edition? And yeah online access is only $30… the 8th edition is only like $10 including shipping and 9th edition is 100 at least.

i had no chem knowledge coming in, and still thought the class was a joke. First half of the course was basically doing simple conversion, so if you got some decent math skills, you’ll rock the exams.
ok look, no one’s gona care if u have a new 9th edition book, or a crappy old 8th or 1st edition book, the material doesn’t change. Once you get the concepts, if there are even any lol, down, youre good to go.

^Really? I haven’t heard of any other engineering pre-req being a joke, and if you count chemistry as both 130 and 125/126, I’ve heard it’s challenging too.

Just wondering tho, why did you guys order your books so early? We still have plenty of times, its not like the bookstores run out, is it?

Well outside of getting unlucky with lab partners chemistry doesn’t seem that bad. I know there are mixed responses on here but it seems like people who are good at chem wont have too much trouble at this. I have to take physics for the third year in a row so i’ve got mechanical down. E&M i expect to be difficult though. When i did that last year r teacher had a baby, are sub didn’t know anything, and we all checked out. Calc three should be easy, i took it last year and didn’t get credit. Plus the textbook.has nothing new. I’m not sure about diffy qs though, idk how hard that’ll be. Them just two humanities classes. Not too bad, imo.

I ordered books early cuz shipping time. Really its my first set of textbooks so i wasn’t 100% sure everything was right so that way i had time to fix mistakes.

Do not buy books for the bookstores. Plain and simple. (Only exceptions are lab manual/coursepacks)
Prices are going up up up as used book inventory is depleted online.
