Ole Miss Scholarships

Nothing on our end either.

My daughter just got awarded a competive scholarship today. The Brevard Engineering Scholarship. Hopefully, they will be announcing all competive scholarships soon!

^

Congratulations!

Still waiting on engineering scholarships and Ole Miss First Scholarship. Anyone else hear anything?

@stem2017 - No but my sons portal says
ā€œFAFSA-based aid and other awards will be packaged beginning early April 2017.ā€
so Iā€™m thinking DS17 most likely isnā€™t going to get anything else and if by chance he does he wonā€™t hear about it until April.

Same here @MichiganGeorgia I was just hoping that some early notifications had come. One person posted (#41) that their daughter got the Brevard. But that was a flyby single poster - never sure whether or not to believe them.

Good luck to your DS!

Nothing here either. I was told April 1st when I inquired with the FA office. We are pleased with what has been offered, so anything else would be gravy. Not counting on it.

Agree @uncletupelo. So far we are very happy with the package. However, S worked hard on the scholarship essays to weā€™re hoping for a little bit of ā€œgravy.ā€

Good luck!

Waiting on Womenā€™s Council, Ole Miss First, Luckyday, and Honors Collegeā€¦ I guess I wonā€™t find out until April. Anyways, good luck and I hope to see you/your child in Oxford next year

When I posted earlier, my daughter received a letter from the Dean of engineering notifying her of this award. She accepted and it it is now posted to her myOleMiss account.

Thatā€™s a helpful piece of info, thanks.

Is that how it works? Do they send a written engineering scholarship offer before they post the offer on the Ole miss acct? Do you have to accept the engineering scholarship before they post it?

Also, I donā€™t mean to pry but weā€™re trying to put this ole miss competitive scholarship thing to bed and move on. If itā€™s not asking too much could you share your daughters academic stats so I can have some baseline or indication as to what they consider when awarding these engineering scholarships?

Thanks much.

I think that it will only be posted when you officially accept the offer.
35 ACT
4.27 GPA

Thanks much.

While some of the departmental scholarships have been awarded, there are still a large number of university foundation scholarships that are handled through the Office of Financial Aid that have not been made public at this time. That is where the April 1 notice comes in. There are efforts to ensure that funds are spread around to as many students as possible, For instance, a student who get an Honors College or Croft Institute would not be awarded another competitive scholarship. So, there is still time for students to receive additional awards beyond the initial offer.

Also, please keep in mind that if your students are valedictorian/salutatorian, student body president, Eagle Scout/Girl Scout Gold Award recipients, STAR Student (MS) and a few other designations, there are additional awards that they will receive once documentation is submitted to the university. Also, students who were elected to the Governor position of Boys State or Girls State OR were selected to attend Boys/Girls Nation are awarded additional scholarships.Lastly, if your student has advanced to Finalist with National Merit, documentation needs to be sent in for the additional scholarship associated with that designation. I hope that this helps a little!

Thank you for that info. Very helpful. My oos D was admitted to Honors and LLI. I read your post to mean that she would not be getting any additional money from competitive scholarships. Is this correct? She got 22,884 Academic Excellence and 3k Holmes. Thank you. I really appreciate the knowledge you bring to this forum.

Nevermind. I re-read your post and get what you are saying. You were speaking of Honors/Croft scholarships and not being admitted to those programs.

Very helpful. Thanks much.

You seem to have a good understanding of how ole miss operates with some of this.

Do you have some sense about how oos competitive scholarships may be awarded? Iā€™ve been to the website and know what oos competitive scholarships are available but I get the impression the stats have to be extremely high for an award and awards seem few.

My son was not awarded an oos honors scholarship and I seriously doubt they will swing back around to him in the event scholarships are turned down.

Iā€™m just trying to get some sense about wether or not we need to shift our direction.

If this helps, here are his base stats.

32 act
3.6 weighted gpa. The scale used in his school is 74 to 83 C, 84 to 93 B, 94 to 100 A.
Decent extracurriculars.

I know these are tricky questions and difficult to answer. Iā€™m just looking for some general idea about wether or not heā€™s a long shot for other competitive scholarships such as engineering.

Thanks

Iā€™ve only seen one (brand new) poster mention a departmental scholarship. I think (hope) they are still deciding.

Weā€™ll know by April 1, in any case.
