Ole Miss Scholarships

Yeah I saw that too and the student had extremely high academic stats. I think competitive scholarships, especially oos are probably reserved from the most elite students.

@uncletupelo It doesnā€™t necessarily mean that. Just being admitted to a program doesnā€™t mean an automatic ā€œnoā€ on other awards. Most programs will continue to award scholarships until all are filled.

@General tso chicken Please keep in mind that there are foundation awards still being awarded that may not come from a department. Your studentā€™s 32 ACT does give him the full nonresident tuition scholarship. So, hopefully, that would help! Most depends on the foundation scholarships that are available.

Hopefully students have been in touch with their admissions representatives. That, at times, helps as they can assist in advocating for students as scholarship decisions are made. Best wishes!!

Thank you again for all of your insight.

I see what you mean and yes the merit and holmes scholarships are terrific. However those scholarships only put us in line with what alabama offers. Weā€™re looking for more financial incentive to attend ole miss.

@ā€œGeneral tso chickenā€ - ?? DS17 has a 32 and the merit and Holmes make it cheaper to go to Ole Miss than UAā€™s presidentialā€¦ What am I missing?

@STEM2017 I just thought I would update you that my son received one of the Accounting awards of $3,000 per year a few days ago. Very glad to get it, but worried that means heā€™s out of the running for any of the $8,000 or $10,000 scholarships. He has pretty high stats (35 ACT, 4.35/3.94 gpa, so didnā€™t think the larger scholarships were out of the question.

Right now heā€™s leaning against Ole Miss because of the 13th grade factor, but thatā€™s not for certain.

Youā€™re not missing anything. Itā€™s just that the merit and holmes scholarships put ole miss in the same ball park as alabama with the presidential and engineering scholarships. Thereā€™s not much difference in cost and so for stem studies I think alabama is better, thatā€™s all.

However if ole miss offers more in terms of financial aid than the merit and holmes, then purely for financial reasons ole miss would get the nod over alabama.

Helpful @EarlVanDorn. Thanks!

Yeah your sonā€™s stats confirm my thought that competitive scholarships are reserved for the most elite students.

I doubt heā€™s out of the running for the others.

I hadnā€™t checked the myolemiss portal in quite awhile and it now on the first page it says ā€œaward notification March 9ā€ but unless Iā€™m missing something when I click on the award status accept/decline page the total award amount hasnā€™t changed. Any ideas? thanks!

@bulldog25 I think that means the last time you checked the Award Notification page was March 9.

Next time you check it will say March 21.

Thanks stem2017 - I donā€™t think thatā€™s it though. The only other date listed on the award notification page is 12/09/2016 when he got his other scholarships. Iā€™ve checked back several times since then -just not since maybe the middle of february.

My sonā€™s always says the last time I checked itā€¦

I just want S to get some kind of notification whether itā€™s yes or no. He worked very hard on the application and essays and heā€™d like to put the matter to bed and move on.

Have you received notification on the honors scholarships? If not then youā€™re still in the running.

My son received a rejection letter on his honors scholarship application with a couple of weeks of the application.

This was back in January.

@STEM2017 - I understand where you are coming from. We are currently planning on UA but if DS got another scholarship at Ole Miss he would most likely go to Ole Miss instead. We really like Ole Miss itā€™s just UA is closer and not really doable to visit without staying over night. So I think any cost savings right now would be used up in travel expenses to visit him.

Son was accepted to Honors several months ago but it came with no money and it was a separate application from scholarships.

He got the automatic money, but weā€™re still waiting for the special scholarships.

Just curious if anyone else here applied for METP? My son found out yesterday that he was accepted into the program which is very exciting, but heā€™s still not 100% sure about it. If youā€™re not familiar, itā€™s a full ride teaching program that requires a commitment to teach for 5 years in MS after graduation. Itā€™s a little difficult for my liberal, suburban Chicago kid to envision himself in the ā€œDeep Southā€ for at least the next 9 years, but he is open to it, and he likes the idea of giving back and hopefully making a difference in a potentially underserved area of the country. He also applied to LLI because he wants to double major in Public Policy, but hasnā€™t heard anything back from them yet. He hasnā€™t heard from the Honors College either.

We took a trip down in February and visited Ole Miss for the first time and Univ of Alabama for the second time. We had a full day of meetings at Ole Miss which sold my husband and I (we loved Oxford!), but our son is still dazzled by UA. Even without METP, and any other scholarships than what heā€™s received already (Academic Excel, Holmes and Eagle Scout), Ole Miss is quite a bit cheaper. He liked Ole Miss a lot too, but those darn suite style dorms at UA are almost irresistible to him! Heā€™s also had it in his head from the minute he got his ACT score last June that he was going to UA.

I think if he gets accepted into LLI and the Honors College, that would seal the deal for him at Ole Miss. Without those, Iā€™m not sure?
