Ole Miss vs Mississippi State for Business

My son is a current high school senior considering Ole Miss & Miss State for a business degree He is getting OOS scholarship money from both schools, with State offering a more generous amount
He will likely pledge a fraternity He likes the small town & SEC atmosphere both schools offer
Please share any tips, advice or insight you have on these two schools & their student life
Thanks y’all

Has he been to both ? They are not the same. I’ve only been MSU - gorgeous.

Not been Oxford but I think it’s more town adjacent. Ie in town vs an entrance road in.

Make sure you go see both !!!

Good luck.

How does he feel about being deafened by the clang of cowbells at a football game…?

Seriously, though, I agree that the two are quite different. My husband went to Ole Miss so I know it better…very pretty campus, classically Southern. Greek life is huge there, so if your son plans to pledge a fraternity he’ll be in good company. The business school is excellent.

MS State tends to draw more students looking toward majors like engineering, CS, architecture, vet science. That’s not an absolute, but students tend to break along those lines vs finance, accounting, marketing, journalism or Ole Miss’ other strengths.

As a town, Oxford wins hands down over Starkville, IMO. It has a beautiful old town square with great shops and a number of excellent restaurants. Plus the literary tradition (Faulkner’s Rowan Oak is nearby). I find Starkville less appealing, but it’s just personal preference.

Definitely tour both, if you haven’t.

Thx for the replies
Yes we have visited both schools and he really liked both campuses
We were pretty solid on Ole Miss until he received a letter offering a lot scholarship money …. Now we’re confused ?!?!

I’ve never been a fan of the annoying cow bells but I must admit they’re growing on me after hearing all about their tradition

You are saying Miss St offered a lot more $$?

In the end, if he prefers ole Miss and you can afford it without financial strain, then go to Ole Miss.

If money is an issue or the delta is too much to pass over, there you go. Ms State wins.

Until one steps foot on campus they have no idea if a school is right for them. You may have a bad prof, bad roomie…whatever. Plenty transfer out or hate their dream school.

I’d have to look. I know MSU is aggressive on auto merit but thought Ole Miss was also at certain academic levels of course.

Only you can decide on how much the money should impact the decision.
