Hi, I am an asian female from California and I am applying to Vassar for a math major.
I have 1870 SAT (680m 640 w 550cr)
will my CR hurt me since I am a math major? Other than SATs, i have great states, 4.4 GPA, and over 1500 hrs of community service and I am ranked 14/596
please help me. i really want to go to vassar but should i do ED II?!? will it help me?
o, and I need financial aid too (probably a good amount)

1870 sat for an international would be quite low i guess...i had 2060( 790m 600 cr 670 w)..had applied ed1..got deferred...so in my view that score is a touch low..but then your other stats are good...1500 hrs of community service is quite extraordinary...i was 14/91 and u are also 14 but 14/596....its always good to go ed than rd....

yea, the thing is, i really want to go to Colgate or VAssar but Ive never been to either campus so im scared about applying ED II, is it as strict as EDI?

Correct me if I am way off, but EDII is binding and basically the same as EDI except for later in the year.

Sharpie is right. And as to whether to apply to Colgate or Vassar?

Vassar is pretty much one of the most beautiful campuses on the face of the planet. It's extremely prestigious as a member of the Seven Sisters and has a great alumni network. And it's pretty much amazing in every other regard.

Aaaand Colgate is in the middle of no where and is named after toothpaste.

Keep in mind, I'm very biased! I'm a Brewer from EDI.

Maybe apply RD. You don't want to be locked into a school you haven't even visited.

And also add some schools to your list that are more of a match for your stats. You'll have a much better shot of getting financial aid that way.

i was thinking that bucknell and lafayette are matches for me bc my SAT scores are in their range, around 25th percentile and washington college was a bit of a safety

If you're talking Washington College in Maryland, it would be a safety for you. If you're talking Washington U in St. Louis, still a reach. I think Bucknell and Lafayette would be good matches, however. You might also take a look at Wheaton College in Mass., Bard (same area as Vassar), Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall, and Skidmore. If you're open to something not on the west coast, St. Olaf College in Minnesota has an excellent math department and is anxious to recruit from the west coast. They are generous with merit money and financial aid. It's in the same town as Carleton, about 45 minutes from Minneapolis.

A 1230 out of 1600 isn't going to cut it for Vassar nor Colgate, even if you apply EDII. Plus Vassar is 60% girls, as they are trying to recruit more guys, being a female clearly doesn't help. I say apply to less competitive and prestigious liberal arts schools, ex. Bucknell or Skidmore are both near the tri-state area.

how about a GUY with a composite score of 1290?

does the theory of 'cut off standardized test scores' ever count??..I mean as far as I know...Vassar is more than just numbers...isn't it?

Obviously most liberal arts colleges are much 'more' that just numbers. So if you have a lot of things (awesome ECs/grades/essays) to back you up, you still have a good shot. But mediocre ECs/grades + 1870 SATs will most probably result in rejection.

It seems 2060 + lot of need for aid+ decent EC's + decent grades+ fair enuf essays= deferred

^^
lol no.....
I think
International student + fin aid + ED = deferred.

yeah...whatever the reason....I hated it a lot....but won't give up that easily...come this April and I will turn around the tables for sure....

But mediocre ECs/grades + 1870 SATs will most probably result in rejection.

no offense but are you guys saying i have mediocre grades and ECs??? i have the most community service out of most ppl i know. Also, i have great grades, I have a 5.0 GPA for this semester. Also, my community service is not counting my freshmen and sophmore yr bc i recorded that in another file and i didnt want to count it

No one suggested that you have mediocre ECs/grades.
What we are trying to say is that if your SAT scores are the only bad thing on your app then DEFINITELY APPLY.
But if you lack good grades and ECs then don't...

Since you have good ECs and grades, "DEFINITELY APPLY" !!!

Many people were saying that Vassar takes financial need into consideration, pretty sure that’s false. They boast every chance they get to say that it isn’t considered at all. They are what you call “need blind.”

First of all, this thread is like 3 years old. And Vassar is need-blind to US citizens/permanent residents but is need-aware for int’l students.
