OMG i'm in:) likely letter!!

Someone with an impressive resume/awards would be hesitant to write out the whole list for you. I would not post about my awards or accomplishments on the internet for fear of being identified. Or I would underemphasize my awards. For example, if I simply listed “chemistry research” you may not take a second glance at it, although it would’ve been a significant part of my application and my focus.

Once again, don’t stress about not getting a likely letter don’t compare yourself to likely letter recipients. Columbia is the ultimate judge and decision maker.

@powerbomb: My numbers do not approach the level of some of the other people on this thread. In my case, it wasn’t amazing awards or anything like that either. To be quite honest, I have no idea why I received one. Maybe it was the weird essay?? Or maybe the admissions dude had too much Smirnoff the night before coming to work? :o

My SAT scores are not superscored, as I only took that dreadful exam once, and didn’t get an astronomical score. My history and lit are awesome, but my Math II score is in the 63rd percentile. :frowning: Numbers definitely aren’t everything.

And I agree wholeheartedly will iCalculus, although I really don’t care if I’m identified on the internet: privacy is overrated. :D

ksarmand, if you don’t mind me asking, what were your SAT scores, again?

2270: 800 cr, 710 m, 760 w

I got my likely letter today as well…very happy! I’m an international student as well, but its strange…the day after I write to them saying I do not want financial aid anymore…coincidence?
Still holding out for Princeton though…

mrbritish can you post stats?

^^Kelloggss: How did that letter turn out? I noticed that ur from Canada… I’m in the same position… >.<

ksarmand has just proven my point ;)

ksarmand:

powerbomb:

ksarmand:

Now, in a typical situation, if someone claimed that he/she didn’t get an astronomical score, I would assume that he/she performed terribly.

I love you silly CCers.

dang - it seems like Columbia has sent out the most likely letters out of any of the ivies (with the exception of Dartmouth)! Yale only sends out like 100 (stat found from a Yale Daily News article - first page of results if you search “likely letter ivy” on Google), and just about 4 or 5 people have written about receiving one in the Yale forum. Unless Columbia applicants are significantly bigger CollegeConfidential fans, it seems like Columbia is pushing the 200-300+ letter threshold.

a likely is still a great accomplishment, obviously, but it almost feels like its significance is diminished just a little bit by this knowledge…

I hope I’m not taking this the wrong way, but I agree that a lot of our ECs have been summarized and it isn’t right to jump to conclusions without having access to our complete information. I don’t think we can assume anything is a bigger factor unless we had read each application. Columbia clearly saw merits in LL recipients and that’s sufficient, I guess.

At the end of the day, regardless of how many likelies are sent, Columbia still has a <10% acceptance rate. Some of you are ridiculous. First of all, majority of people accepted don’t get a likely, so the people who get likelies are significantly below that 10% threshold. And you’re arguing that because it SEEMS like many people got likelies(many ■■■■■■ could have picked up on this thread since it was posted a while ago), the value of the likely letter is diminshed. No. False.

If darn pigs hadn’t started this thread in the middle of January when literally the first likely letter was sent out, I’ll bet that significantly less people would have posted about a likely from Columbia.

Yeah sure.
2310 sat 1 superscore 2300 not
800 maths ii 750 lit 740 phy
4 As and a B (although b is likely to go up)
3Astars 2As predicted at A level.
Essays - quite good I thought.
ECs head of econsoc, chief editor of school economics magazine, in target 2.0 national final later on in march (basically econ American idol etc), been to
Uganda helping to build a school, stayed a week with kids with cerebral palsy, autism etc etc.

Sorry if I’m blabbing, I’m just quite happy. It did come, as I said before, the day after I wrote saying I didn’t need fin aid anymore…

iCalculus, CC can be ridiculous sometimes…also, I doubt CC is an accurate representation of the applicant pool since most CCers consider a 2100 an awful score.

Heyyy! Congrats!! I was wondering, OP, did you apply for financial aid?

oh! I also never posted my Stats (an email from Columbia Engineering discussing my likely jogged my memory)

SAT: 1910- M:680,CR:620,W:610 (10 on essay)
ACT: 31-M:31,E:31,R:34,S:29, E/W: 30 (10 on essay)
SAT IIs: Chem: 620, Math II: 660

Full IB Diploma Candidate (Plus AP Calculus,Physics and Orchestra- No study halls at all)
Maths SL: 6, Music SL: 5
Strong Essays and Recs
URM- African American Male (although, I try to not play that card: I would rather have the stats schools are looking for. My ACT is in Columbia’s 50% Range)
Selective but Passionate Extracurriculars. I don’t spread my self overly thin. I have a few activities that I get deeply involved in.

I did apply for FinAid.

X___x ^ whoa

Can people also list their ethnicities? It plays a MAJOR role in admissions.

I received a likely as well…but got rejected from Stanford.

I feel like essays had a lot to do with this, my columbia essay was awesome (and there was only one, so I couldn’t ruin it with other more mediocre essays). Of the people who have posted stats, they aren’t outrageously high.

yeah, my stats are alright, but not insane.

i got rejected from stanford early too…but i think thats because my essays for them were absolutely crap…

and maybe my ethnicity did have some part to play…
nationality wise i’m UK and US,
ethnicity wise i’m English and Chinese
and i’m sorta jewish, but not really…

@nk9230 - congrats!

“Can people also list their ethnicities? It plays a MAJOR role in admissions.”

Is that true?
