But then there's the issue of grade inflation. In my school, it's really not that difficult to get straight A's, it's taking the harder classes that bring it down. & with everybody getting good grades, who knows about our rankings & such? (I'm not sure if BSes ask for ranks, but ..) I'm not worried my grades at all, it's my ECs that I'm panicking over! I moved recently and everything's been moved back to square 1 :(
@ Your school, maybe you'd get 2 A+'s and be at the top of class. That's alot more impressive than somebody with all A's and at 20th or something (I'm not sure how they would rank that, but you know..)

But asking if 96th percentile is good enough is a bit dramatic, though. :P

haha, i just wiki'ed that.

"excessive need .. inappropriate seductiveness"
HAHA. i'm sorry. i know what it means, but that part was funny. :))

Grades dont meant to much, I'm not afraid of the person with all A+'s cuz thats not going to get them into the school. The only factors by themselves that can influence your application positively in my opinion are the essay and interviews.

Everything else can HURT your application...but I don't feel anything else really affects it positevly TOO much.

I don't agree with that. Grades and SSAT are simply check offs for the schools, they want to knwo you can handle the work. They admit people into the schools not only because they can handle the work, but based off of what they hear at interviews, essays, and teacher recs. THATS the only way they can get to know you as a person. Plenty of people have good grades and SSATs.

I understand what you're saying. Many people with good grades can apply to a school, but the school will only accept those with the best essays, interview performances, etc.

However, if a student has a poor academic record, he will still get rejected no matter how good the essay/interview/recommendations is.

Ya thats why I referred to grades as a check off...they expect applicants to their schools to be atleast B students. You HAVE to have the grades...but they do you no good with out essays interview and recs...vice-versa. Its just that the other things tell a lot more about you and its almost a prerequisite that you have the grades before thinking about applying.

mpicz, that's exactly the way it works at the top-tier schools. Sure, you can score high on the SSAT. Sure, you can have a 4.0. But all the schools will say is, "Great. This applicant will not immediately be denied admission. Now, what makes this applicant stand out?"

i do have a question about the whole grade/ssat vs. recs/interview thing. My grades havent always been great. If they go kind of up and down sometimes does it matter a lot?

@ cmao:
if they go down substantially, that might be an issue of concern.. you could probably talk to your interviewer or explain on your application somewhere that you were dealing with hardships (if you were, i mean! don't lie :P). somebody on the Yale university thread did that.

i think that the first part of the application that they focus on is the grade/ssat.. i mean, if it's good enough (80 & higher is of no concern, or something..) then they start focusing on your ECs/recs/interviews more, right? & still, they're both really important. it's not like andover's going to let in somebody with 99th percentile SSATs, straight A's, but no ECs, not a great interview, and mediocre recs. they still have to be unique and have a life outside of school :P

i wouldn't say it matters too much (grade fluctuation) but if it's huge, like from an A average to a C average, then you should probably explain it somehow. that's just my opinion, though.

That depends from school to school, and as I am constantly reminded, no schools have a set formula for admission. You can offset things like grade fluctuation by proving that said fluctuation is only a little problem because you also have amazing ECs, recs, interviews, and essays.

this is something i posted earlier to krn124151 something something guy

i think you have a good chance. but even with stats like as yourself, noone is guaranteed in (unless its immaculate, spick and span, covers every single aspect of the book perfectly, wtever). i personally think rather than getting encouragement and self-esteem from fellow cc members by boasting stats, the time is more well spent working on them essays. just try your best, shoot for the moon! no matter where what happens, something always comes out of it. and posting these stats pretty much turn off many cc members (even myself). and those of you who are sulking to his stats, looks like you've got work to do! instead of wondering why cant my stats be like that, make an effort so that it'll look like that! so please people, don't make sarcastic or mean remarks because he posted his intimidating stats (i've got to admit, from a fellow korean it is intimidating!) and that seems like he's boasting. i've got to tell you, you'll get nothing but "that's really good, you have a good chance" and all related statements by putting up your stats. i mean, what are you expecting? encouragement? criticism? hey, we should have an encouragement board! i'm rambling here, but my point:

If you want to put up your stats, that's fine. I guarantee you that you'll get nothing more but the statements that has been already said, somethin like "that's real good, you have an awesome chance" or either "you stuck-up @#$#%, go show off somewhere else".
and people who respond, don't say mean things! it's not nice. might as well polish you own stats rather than saying mean remarks.

TO HELL WITH THAT, THIS IS HILARIOUS! i tried to be more soft with the chancing ppl, but seriously it gets on my nerve! god! i totally agree w/ you guys- time well better spent writing those stats on your apps rather than puting it here for some self-esteem.
