I'm a first year living in the dorms at College Ten. Just wondering about the difficulty of actually obtaining an apartment on campus... Most of my concern is for money. I'm looking at 9/10 apartments right now, but my friends want us to all live together and the configurations aren't exactly working. I'm looking at the Village right now, but I don't know if it's a good place to live. Is it decent? What are the chances of any second years having rooms there? What are the chances of a few of my friends living together?

Mostly I'm worried about the decency of the house. How can a single room be so cheap without a catch? Also, how is the community kitchen? Is it good for cooking? Could I cut out my meal plan or at least bring it down to 55 meals? Thanks for whatever info you can give.

I don’t think you’ll want to live there. If you think Crown is isolated- the village is practically off the map. With a huge hill to conquer. I’ve been inside one of the houses, and that in itself is pretty nice. Decent sized rooms and a modest eating area. The kitchen isn’t bad from what I heard.

Your chances of getting an apartment behind 9/10 as a second year is maybe a bit lower than your chances at other colleges due to popularity, but don’t take my word on it. To up your chances- apply to the most common room configuration type with a full group. Last year my friends got screwed over because they tried for a 5-person configuration, which is the least common for where they were applying.

You’ll likely be happy with 55 meals as long as you are in the apartments somewhere.

One other option to look into is the Redwood Grove apartments.

The only thing about Redwood Grove is that they have a limited number of double rooms, and I definitely can’t afford a single. My main goal for next year is to cut down my living costs and hopefully live with a few of my friends.

As for the Village, I don’t really mind the potential isolation, just as long as it’s a safe and decent place to live. I guess I’ll go down and try to get an idea of it from the outside. Thanks for your advice, though! I’ll be thinking more about the apartments too…
