UCSC College 10

I haven't been able to find any good reviews on College Ten at UCSC. There aren't many. Anyways, I was considering going to Crown, but it doesn't look very spacious. I only liked it because I read that it was a dorm where you could actually get some peace and quiet to do homework and such, and that there isn't much partying or ignorant people. I'm not too sure about College Ten though. I just want a dorm with nice, friendly people, good atmosphere, and peace and quiet around night time to do homework. But then again, I've never been to UCSC, so I wouldn't really know much. Anyone care to spread their knowledge?

I had a peaceful hall at Porter. It just depends who you get on your floor. Also you can always exercise your right to report people for being unnecessarily noisy or violating noise curfews. You’ll be able to find what you need as long as you answer the housing questions accurately and exercise your rights to a peaceful living experience.

Don’t believe any of the stereotypes about the colleges.

Most of the colleges (maybe all?) have a study intensive type theme. I cannot answer for other colleges, but at Porter this meant that those halls observed quiet hours all the time.

10 is pretty central on campus. It’s located along with 9 at upper campus and has the dining hall that is usually the one open late seven days a week. I did like that the windows were the up down kind and not the side sliding or opening vertical kind. Spent a summer there and it was wonderful for my window fan that was built for those kind of windows. Had to find a different style fan for my window at Porter.

Crown is awesome, but it’s at the top of Cardiac Hill along with Merrill. Banana Joe’s is up there, kind of a quickmart/street food place. Unless it changes, Crown/Merrill dining hall has the worst hours of any dining hall, though. I would say a lot of the stereotype that Crown is quiet for studying comes from the fact many people do not go up there unless they have to.

That said, it is still a great place like all the colleges. It’s definitely the one that will really keep one in shape, that’s for sure ;)

The rooms I can’t answer much on. But something to keep in mind that I learned the hard way is not all the colleges have elevators. I was spoiled by both of Porter’s dorm buildings having them. I was told some do at the others, but not all and certainly not the one at 10 I stayed in :(. My minifridge was a pain (literally) to get up the stairs.

Crown does have older buildings. 10 is newer by decades. However, most rooms on campus are supposed to meet a minimum square footage based on the room it’s labeled as. Be careful, though, I discovered that there is such a thing as a small single although it is not listed.

Ah, thank you so much. This was very informative. On one of the reviews I read about Crown, it said that the showers were unsanitary, and that kind of scared me away.

Honestly, all shared showers could be considered unsanitary. Flipflops for the shower are a necessary thing.

That said, if anything is legitmately a health concern, one just has to report it through the “fix-it” site. For the most part, unsanitary just means people are not taking care of their own mess rather than nothing being taken care of by the custodian staff. It’s amazing how big of a mess people can make in such a short time.

But yeah. Flipflops. Any shared shower always wear flipflops.

When we visited, College Nine and Ten seemed to have a large majority of Asians students…
