one day orientation

Because it occurs in August right before the first day of class, are you able to get the classes you need (engineering focus) and still have a decent schedule?

I’m not an engineering student, but I might be able to somewhat answer your question! I think you’ll notice that a lot of classes will be filled up by the time you get to orientation, but I wouldn’t be too concerned because the University does take into account that there are students with orientations late in the year. A lot of the time, they’ll reserve some seats in classes that tend to fill up quickly for students like you, and that will allow you a fair chance at getting the class.

Something that I did in preparation for my orientation at uiowa was look up the courses I wanted to take on MyUI before my orientation so I knew which classes were already filled up and which would most likely still be open by the time I got there. It was really nice because then I didn’t spend time freaking out about classes being full (like a lot of the other kids in my orientation group did). I honestly think you’ll be fine though and you’ll get a good enough schedule!! If you’re super concerned, I would email your advisor and they may have some good tips for you too. Good luck and welcome to the University of Iowa!
