WELL HERE IT IS: I'm coming up on having to make a decision about who to commit to and here are the results...

Brown- yes
Columbia- no
Harvard- wait listed
Rice- yes
NYU- ?
Boston U- yes
Howard- yes

Now I'm wondering if I should hold my breath for the Big Dog (Harvard) or go ahead and put my deposit in somewhere else... and if I opt for number two which should I go for? ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

It is recommended to deposit at one school. Decisions about waitlist come after May 1st and continue into the summer, so it would be silly and foolish to not deposit anywhere.

If you decide to pursue the waitlist, get accepted and decide to go to the "Big Dog", write an email/letter to the school you deposited in, telling them you decided not to enroll there and will give up your deposit. (They're non-refundable, anyway.)

You MUST deposit somewhere by May 1st.

As for which school to deposit at, it all depends on your personal preferences, money, major (possibly), etc.

Are you allowed to put in deposits at more than one school if you can't make up your mind by May 1st? It seems as though I'm very educated on things up until the "you've gotten in" part.

I know people who done that, kept deciding between 2 places all summer, decided on one and changed their mind on first day of college. I believe you will loose some money including deposit if you act this way but schools are prepared and know that such stories do happen.

Well, I doubt if i wait that long but i'm kind of struggling with the decision of going to Brown for that "name brand" education and an Ivy stamp (ranked 15th of all schools), Rice, where I'll get just as good if not a better education but not have the "Ivy Advantage" (ranked 17th), or Vanderbilt where I'll get to stay true to my southern roots and receive an excellent ed. at a very rich institutuion but not have as recognizable of a name on my diploma (ranked 18th).

i'm a prospective econ major and hopefully (if i can handle the workload) get a minor in corporate finance. as you can probably tell, i'm on a pre-business track for investment banking. All of my fin. aid packages are stellar (conidering my EFC is off the chart) I've also visited all three and i feel like i "fit" at all three. What do you reccommend

you definitely need to visit each school, sit in on classes, spend the night, talk to students and see where you see your self.

Skip harvard's waitlist as it is very unlikely that you will come off of it .

To be honest with you, if you are AA, then your overall best bet would be Howard as more major corporations come there especially for minority recruiting, than to the other schools for recruiting across the board.

read the fine print before depositing at multiple schools (a big no-no) as you do risk having your admission rescinded at both schools. It is a different story if you send a deposit, and then decide not to go because you were called off a waitlist (then you just lose the deposit).

Well, I did go to howard for a weekend and then I went to Vandy for a weekend. I was thinking the same thing as u about the minority recruitment thing but when I talked to the dean of Vanderbilt's business school (one of the top 50 in the nation) he said graduate schools don't like for applicants to have undergraduate degrees in business because they feel like their school will teach a person every thing he/she needs to know and they would rather take an applicant with a more well rounded college experience. So that still leaves me with the other 3 which have excellent econ programs and i'm still completely confused about what move to make next!!

Well, I'm probably going to keep myself on the wait list. I don't see the harm in it except for the fact that I'll lose the deposit from my other school, but that still leaves me with the question: which will be that "other" school. right now the general consensus is brown, but i'm still looking for other opinions!

I think u should see each school again and do the same as everyone suggest. You also have to think dont go to a school because of its ranking, go to the school because you absolutely love everything about it, not because it will get an edge during an interview.

Brown undergrad > Harvard undergrad, my friend. Harvard undergrad is INCREDIBLY overrated. The only good thing about Harvard is it's grad school, especially for business and law. Brown, however, is awesome at undergrad.
