One Last Thread Asking for Help: Wesleyan, IWU and Kenyon

As some of you may recall, I made a thread a couple of weeks ago asking for help between Wesleyan, Illinois Wesleyan, and Kenyon. I have ruled out Kenyon and Wesleyan due to financial reasons, and now I'm deciding between Illinois Wesleyan and Trinity Texas. I know most people on CC probably aren't familiar with these schools, but maybe you can at least asses my pros-cons list.

Trinity Pros

San Antonio is wonderful

Mild Winters

Extremely Attractive Women

Beautiful Campus

Trinity Cons

Theater department may not be up to snuff

There are kids from my school going there (2), and I'm not crazy about them

I really don't want to get stuck in Texas. I want to get an M.F.A. in screenwriting, and work in the film industry, so getting to LA is a must.

The school is really greek. I'm not sure if this is totally bad yet, but it might be.

IWU Pros

The admissions counselor there has put a ton of time and effort into recruiting me.

With may term, I could do study abroad four times.

They have an excellent theater department, and I have been in contact with their professors, and they seem interested in having me attend.

It would make my parents happy.

IWU Cons

It's in Bloomington, Illinois

It gets fairly cold there

I could get stuck in the midwest, which I'm terrified of, since I've lived in the midwest my entire life.

I have been thinking about going to Trinity, and just focusing on History and English, and doing theater for fun, but I'm not sure. What are your thoughts? Thanks

Any thoughts?

In my opinion, you need to focus on what’s really important here- which is the quality of the theater and academic departments you are interested in. If you don’t know whether you want to major in theater/fine arts, English or history or a combination, consider all three. Both are smaller schools, so read the bios of the faculty, look at the list of classes, look at/ask questions on the cc forums for both schools.

I wouldn’t worry about getting stuck in a particular area of the country (make plans to move to L.A. or where ever after graduation), pretty girls (they are everywhere- never mind the skin-deep thing), the weather (too hot vs. too cold), etc.

Good luck!

There are a couple of other things I’d like to throw out

I have visited IWU four times so far, and the first three times I really did not like the school, which concerns me.

I’m also worried about the geographic diversity of IWU, as 85% of the students come from Illinois. Maybe this isn’t something to worry about.

I also just kinda felt happier at Trinity…should I ignore this?

Essentially my heart says go to Trinity, and my brain says go to IWU.

San Antonio is the 7th most populated city in the US, and it has NUMEROUS opportunities for the performer. The weather is fabulous, and Trinity is nestled by Breckinridge Park, so the scenery is beautiful. It’s on the “Dorms Like Palaces” list for Princeton Review and 17 magazine. The food is also above average for a university. Another thing my D and I both loved about Trinity was how personal and community-oriented it was. Dean Ellerson (admissions) had the dean of the science department email our D personally to discuss the school’s science curriculum. The pre-med advisor also contacted her. He even arranged for our D to meet a senior from our area who had just been accepted to med school. We treated this student to dinner and he answered a plethora of questions. Personal contact was made throughout the process; it made her feel very special. The academics at Trinity are great as well, and the scholarships…well suffice to say she wouldn’t have had to pay hardly anything! The merit aid they offered was fabulous. In the end she ultimately chose a larger school OOS, but she still encourages friends to consider Trinity; it really is a little jewel in Texas.

Trinity if you can afford it.

As an ISU graduate, I can assure you that Bloomington, IL isn’t THAT bad, and with the State Farm corporate offices there, has an appreciation for the arts much more than you’d expect, and much more than most “college” towns do. Most of the IL students who live in Bloomington/Normal are from the Chicago area, so you won’t need to buy a John Deere hat to fit in. The theater program at IWU has been a great one for a long time. And not to worry about the stuck in the midwest part. I lived in Bloomington for 2 years after graduating, and “escaped”, never to return, except for visits back home to see family. (via Chicago to California to Philadelphia to NC). Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I don’t know how my topic title changed…probably for the best though, as it will attract more attention

Go to Trinity! It has by far the nicest admissions staff I’ve dealt with, very kind people  I have a couple of friends who go there and they’re really happy with everything–the social scene, the academics, the attention they’re receiving from the administration. The weather is amazing and it’s in a big city… What more could you ask for?

I had a really hard time turning down Trinity because of these things. The school just seems to be a very positive place.

Right now I’m leaning towards IWU
