I just found out UVa students can take only one minor? Why is that?
I was planning on taking at least 2.

You can do up to 2 majors and 1 minor. What were you thinking of taking? If they’re related, there might be a mix major you could do or you could create your own major that has the elements of your minor. I was planning on doing a minor but in the end just decided to take the classes I liked which interested me (since each minor I was considering had classes I didn’t really want to take to get the minor). I also enjoyed taking my electives CR/NC and you can’t do that with your minor classes either. I’m sure you will figure out a way to make the classes work for you.

Well, I’m thinking about Math and Com sci as a major but don’t want to restrict myslef to these subjects y’know. I’m still not sure what major I want to go for and was thinking about taking Art History and Astronomy as minors so I can change them to a major if I want to later on…

Astronomy was one of the minors I considered - to minor you have to take this class that meets at night and you observe, it was the deal breaker on that minor. I had a friend who did that class and she was busy 1-2 nights a week that semester doing observation journals all night long. Not worth it at all in my opinion! I ended up taking 2 astronomy classes for credit and I sat in on a 3rd (I attended that class more than the students enrolled!). I took intro astronomy with ed murphy (the BEST), archaeoastronomy (fulfills non western perspectives requirement and super interesting), and then I sat in on the aliens/black hole class with ed murphy also.

One of my other friends majored in art history - a lot of memorizing.

There isn’t a joint math+cs major, you will need to pick just one or else double major. That would mean you would need to choose between astronomy and art history as the official minor. I also was thinking about those two majors and ended up choosing math. I worked for the computer science department as a teaching assistant and took one other class past the intro class (HCI with Tom Horton - also an amazing professor, I worked for him also). Working and the one class were enough for me. I took 2 math classes per semester until I finished my math major and started on my masters in teaching, and just keep in mind to make sure to look at who is teaching the math class and their ratings, it will make or break that math class. I took 3 classes with Karen Parshall, my advisor, she is amazing but has very high expectations. I also took a class with her husband and two classes with Greg Arone. Those were my favorite math professors. If you do choose CS, there is somewhat of a math concentration you can do. Google: BACS.

Keep in mind you can take whatever classes you like even if you don’t have the official minor designation. The only classes that would be hard for that you listed are computer science - that major and minor have severe space restrictions. Astronomy might also be restricted at higher course levels, I forget. Take the intro classes and see how you actually like them at the college level before stressing about how many majors/minors you can have. Otherwise you might consider creating your own major around math, cs, and astronomy, and then minoring in art history.
