One of my recommendation letters referred to me as an "Independent Thinker"

My dad believes that I shouldn’t send that to a military academy because he feels that a quality like that for a cadet is bad.

I however feel the exact opposite. Won’t that be a beneficial thing as an officer?

What do you all believe? I’m a little conflicted. My gut is telling me to send in the letter but at the same time it’s making me ponder if USAFA frowns upon independent thinkers.

Can I get some incite on this?

Much appreciated.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Just send the best recommendation letters that you have. I don’t think the board will care too much one way or the other about one phrase…it’s the overall recommendation that they want to see. JMPO…

It’s a good thing.
It sounds like your father may have some misconceptions about what the military is like. The AF likes people who think. It also requires people who will follow legal orders after their input is rejected by higher authorities. Effective military operations require both creativity and observance of the chain of command. The need for creativity and critical thinking is even more pronounced for leadership (aka what USAFA hopes to produce).
