One Question about the myBerkeleyapp

Hello everyone! I have applied to UC Berkeley majoring in Political Economy.
When filling out form "Major Requirement" at the myBerkeleyapp, I noticed that there is a table for filling in your language:
"Language other than English equivalent to 4 semesters or 8 quarters at the college level; or AP language exam score of 5; or 5 yrs of a language in high school outside the U.S. w/grades of C or better if your language of instruction was not English."
Comparing to my friends applying as "Economics", they do not have that particular box.

I am following the IGETC pattern when applying, I did not take any Language course at CC because I have already fulfill the Language Area in IGETC as I had been learning language other than English in high school for more than 5 years, moreover, took IGCSE (o-level exam) on that language and got a grade more than "C".
Do I still need to fill out that section? Or just leave it blank? Thank you!

I checked the box next to “I took two years of a language in high school” without filling in the table. I don’t know if that’s what they wanted, but that was my guess.

Also curious about this.

I don’t think two years of high school fulfills the foreign language major prep requirement for Political Economy. You need to have at least four semesters of a foreign language.

Are you an international student? If so, I think the five (or four) years of language exempts you. If English is your second language.

@ocnative
yes, I am an international student and I have learned five years of language in high school in my country. Right… as seen in the assist.org, applicant can fulfill either L&S or IGETC requirement. I guess that particular box is for students who are doing the L&S to fill out. And for IGETC students, just check the box " I completed 3 years of the same foreign language in high school with letter grades of “C” or higher for each semester." at another update document “Breadth Requirements”.

NOTE:

  1. There are “Language” boxes in both “Major Prerequisites” and “Breadth Requirements” forms.
  2. In “Breadth Requirements” form, there are two ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS for checking either one:
BOX 1) I completed 2 years of the same foreign language in high school with letter grades of “C” or higher for each semester.
BOX 2) I completed 3 years of the same foreign language in high school with letter grades of “C” or higher for each semester.

Your major prerequisites for the political economy major at Berkeley are Macro and Micro Econ, Stats and IAS 45 which must be taken at Berkeley. The 2 years of proficiency in another language is not a transfer requirement but must be completed by your last semester of your senior year. Hypothetically speaking you don’t have to take a language prior to transfer, but it is better. However since your an international student that has 5 years of language that is not English you would have fulfilled the requirement. So like you said you don’t need to fill out the boxes in language section in the major prerequisites form, but do remember to check the box that states 3 years of the same foreign language in the “Breath form”. Best of luck

ocnative,

Yaa, for political economy, you’re right. I was thinking about my own situation, which doesn’t have any additional language requirements besides the gen ed reqs. I’m just curious about putting high school work into the table.

thanks a lot! I am clear now. Good luck for your application too:) (if you have)

I don’t think you have to put your high school work into the table since it is designed for college’s semester, not for high school.
If you have completed 5 years of other language in high school or equivalent, you will fulfill the IGETC and your school will automatically send your IGETC certificate as to confirm your completion of IGETC before transferring to any UCs.
