I am looking to complete a masters degree (MS or MA) in a biology related field within a year, max. So far I have applied to Georgetown’s MS in Tumor Bio but I have not found any others (most require 2-3 years). Please help!
I’d just like to clarify that I am looking for degree awarding programs (master of science or master of arts) and NOT programs that award certificates of completion.
If you are looking for a research-based M.S. there is little chance of a 1 year completion. There just is not time to do the coursework and a thesis in that time. If you are interested in a coursework only program then it is likely that you need to take about 10-11 courses and since the usual graduate course load is 3 courses a semester, it is hard to see how it can be completed in 1 year unless it is a year-round program and you take 4 courses per semester plus some in the summer. The Georgetown one may be one of a very limited array of choices.
The coursework M.S. program in Biology at my university, Illinois Tech, is typically taken part-time over 2 years by students who are working and take courses during the summers as well. They can also take some or all of the courses online. I think that the shortest time to degree is about 1.5 years.
Usually websites for Master’s programs don’t explicitly say how long it takes. They may say you need to take 10 classes (assuming semester system, not sure about quarters) for a coursework option (I agree 1 year is too short for a thesis option). They also usually say it’s possible to transfer in 2 grad classes from elsewhere. So if you took 2 grad classes elsewhere while applying, then maybe you could squeeze in 8 classes in a fall, spring, and summer term.
Yes, but if you apply for the fall and are not a current student and don’t have a full-time job, you won’t be doing a whole lot in the whole year (or 6 or so months after admission) prior to matriculation, so it can get you the degree sooner in certain situations. Or maybe the OP already took a grad class or 2 during undergrad.
