Hi. I go to a school that does not offer AP US Gov't and Politics. Although I wasn't planning on taking it, a teacher recently turned down an independent study proposal, so I'll have some time on my hands. Does anyone know if online courses are decent? Can only homeschooled kids apply? Are there any alternatives to online courses (private courses in real life, etc)? If so, where can I find these alternatives?

Thanks.

If you want to take online courses, just make sure you are motivated to do so. It is easy to fall behind since the pressure of doing the work is different from that of normal schooling.

For the ones I've looked at, anyone can apply to these online AP courses. In regards to alternatives, you can self-study which isn't a bad alternative if you have the motivation.

If you still want to go with online courses, take a look at Apex Learning.

PAHomeSchoolers, EPGY, and Apex Learning, are just a few of the companies that offer online AP classes. Depending on what state you are in, your state might have a "virtual high school" that offers some courses. Also, it you are taking AP courses this year, look through your AP Student Packet for a list of online course providers.

EPGY has many good online courses; however, I don't think they offer AP US Gov. If you want to take AP Calc or Physics, you should take a look at their website.

Are you mainly interested in studying for the AP test? In that case, I'm not sure if you need to have a course at all; the test doesn't appear to be very extensive. At least, I hope not, since I've never taken a course in the subject, haven't studied at all, and have the test next Wednesday. :)
