online or paper app??

it seems that columbia prefers the online app?/ is this true?

Well ... seeing as they clearly say they prefer it online, I can only guess that is how they prefer it. Just kidding man, but seriously:

"Prospective students are strongly encouraged to use the on-line application in applying to Columbia, as applying electronically is our preferred application process." from http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/applications/

I think they like most colleges prefer online because it puts all the information in the database how they want it and it makes it much easier to deal with. Probably also keeps a massive mail flow from coming in at the deadlines. That's just what why I figured it was that way.

plus...they dont have to make a zillion copies..just print out a separate one for each admissions officer...plus online's just easier

Columbia uploads every document that they recieve onto their database. All paper materials they recieve are have to be scanned and put into the system. If you submit it online it goes right into their system, meaning less work for them.

That is at least partly why Columbia tells you not to rush your scores -- if you send your scores regularly they get them online, but if you rush them they come by paper (where they can get lost in the mailroom and generally just become more work for them).
