My school has a program that allows you to take online classes for free while still being “enrolled” and able to participate in sports and extracurriculars. I am considering taking all my classes online this year (senior year) so that I can participate in two internships. Will online classes have a negative effect on college admissions (for selective schools)? Fyi I will be taking mostly APs, and I currently have a 4.0 unweighted GPA
If they are hosted and credit assigned through the HS then no problem. If not then you would be considered home schooled and someone would need to make a transcript for you.
The classes are through another program but the credits are treated as transfer credits on my transcript, so no, I would not be considered homeschooled. My worry is a college admission officer’s (possibly negative) opinion of online classes, even though they are NCAA and college board approved courses.
For our school district, online and summer course credits will be shown on transcript and used in GPA calculation just as regular classes.
Our district is the same as billcsho’s. D is taking 2 online classes right now specifically because they need to be on her regular school transcript and count towards her GPA. That district is roughly the same size as yours, OP. It’s a very small school that does not offer a lot of options beyond the core courses. Many of the kids there take online classes and AFAIK, none have run into problems with colleges. A number of the kids have been accepted into selective schools.
You could try talking to your high school counselor and calling admissions officers at some colleges you might be interested in. That might be the surest way to find out if taking those online classes would be of any detriment to you.
Good luck.
In our school district, they actually offer 3 sources of online course and they are all accepted as regular credit at HS. Summer classes are ~$300 each while regular semester may be free (I think it is) but limited to 2 per semester (with some exceptions though). So you really need to talk to your GC.
