I sadly ended my junior year with a 2.97 GPA and I was wondering if there was anyway for me to raise it to a 3.0 over the summer by taking online courses. I do not want to cross off various scholarships just because I do not meet the requirement by 0.03. Please help!

I have yet to email my counselor about this, but I will soon!

So I take it you are in college and need a 3.0 to renew your scholarship ?

You need to do the math but I assume that if you were to get enough A’s during the summer you could raise your GPA. Check with the FA office on the exact policy in place for the scholarship you are getting to see how they calculate it.

You can take online classes from community college if they are available in your area. Check now since some classes might have started already. Also since you are a junior in high school, you might need your counselor’s approval to take community college classes.

Online classes taken at any institution other than your own high school may not be calculated into your GPA. Talk to your GC before you spend the money on additional coursework.

Finding counselors to talk to during the summer can be an issue, but I agree to do that first, since you may need advance approval to get a course incorporated into your transcript with or w/o the grade in GPA.

It might be too late, but what about summer school? Our HS offers several non-remedial classes very cheap. Son is taking 6 wk SAT/ACT prep for 1/2 credit as graded class right now and did gym last summer. Or perhaps if you got a ‘C’ in one of your classes, school would let you retake it over the summer and replace or average the grades.

It is possible your district offers online classes of their own and would avoid the hassle of getting approval for some outside class.

You have specific schools/scholarships in mind? Is the required GPA end of junior year, or final transcript end of senior year? If the latter, you have time next year to raise your GPA.

It doesn’t sound like OP is talking about retaking a class, sounds more like taking additional classes to bring up gpa. But the advice of talking to your counselor is the way to go.

For our high school, students need counselor’s signature for approval to take community college classes and the community college classes must be transferable to a 4 year college for them to count for college prep gpa. All the community college near us have already started their summer courses.

Thank you all for your help! I emailed my counselor and this is what she wrote: “Unfortunately, I do not have any good suggestions for you. Any classes taken outside of school need to be pre approved by the academic department. We can address the situation in your essay and my letter about you taking challenging courses!”

I emailed her back by asking if the summer class I am taking at school could be incorporated into my GPA but have not received a reply yet. I am willing to work with the department and try to get approval since this is obviously very important to me. I’m not sure if I will be able to somehow boost my GPA with my first semester grades of senior year though. Is there enough time for that before applications come around?
