I am a Junior and taking algebra 2. I want to know if I can get out of math at school in my Senior year to take Trig/Pr-Cal online thru BYU or some other online program. Trig at school is a year long course and so it would be a waste pf my time as I could take some other subject. Can any one pls let me know if this is possible and if colleges would use my Trig/Precal grades to calculate my GPA ?
Yes, if your high school allows it, you can do math online. My daughter took precalc through BYU and is taking Multivariable Calculus through Johns Hopkins CTY right now.
First you need to figure out if you need this math class for high school graduation requirements, and what kinds of permissions you need to take it online and get the grade transferred to your Hs transcript if it is required. Not required? Then just register and pay for the class and you are good to go! You’ll need to get BYU or other program to send in an official transcript for college applications.
And if you are applying to California schools in the UC system you need to check carefully that they’ll be accepted for he Uc a-g credits.
After seeing my daughter do the precalc class, I can say that it’s helpful to be a strong math student, and helpful to have someone who can help if you get stuck. We found teacher input to be pretty minimal with the. hUnprogram. It’s much better with CTY (but the class is much more expensive).
Cost of the textbook is extra. And tests need to be proctored - you can ask a teacher or pay a testing center to proctor for you.
For GPA calculation, you’ll need to check with the school. My daughter’s BYU class was transferred to her HS transcript and was included with her GPA. Was have not transferred her CTY class at this point, and I don’t know how the colleges are looking at it. It has not been an issue.
thank you ! My S’s school does not include outside courses and grades in the school transcript. So I will have to find out if he meets the high graduation. If he does then will have to figure out next.
