Only 2 yrs of foreign language??

My freshman yr i took French1 but my sophmore year I transferred schools and was put in Spanish 1. Then I transferred schools again before the semester ended and they said spanish was full so they didn't let me take it. Now I'm at another school(junior now) and the counselor put me in spanish speakers 1 because regular spanish is full and I don't remember anything from French whatsoever. So now I'll only have 2 years of the same language and I'm afraid this will prevent me from getting to a good LAC or UC. Will it lower my chances?

Your situation is unique, so I think you should be okay. Just make sure that either your counselor explains the situation in their rec of you explain this in the “additional information” portion of the application…

That’s a great idea hopefully that will help thank you!!

The minimum for UC is level 2 (but level 3 is recommended); can you take that senior year? Alternatively, if you are actually a heritage speaker of Spanish, you can fulfill UC’s language requirement with a sufficiently high SAT subject or AP score.

Unfortunately I’m not fluent in Spanish, I’m not even sure I’ll do well in Spanish Speakers. And yes, I do plan on taking Spanish again senior yr so I’ll at least have 2. How would it look if next year i take Spanish speakers 2 and French 2 at the same time and I self-study French this year so I’ll be ready?

What is the “Spanish Speakers” course? Is it for heritage students, or is it something else entirely? If it is a heritage speaker course, why would you be in it if you are not a heritage speaker?

In any case, you can check what each course counts for in UC/CSU requirements at http://doorways.ucop.edu .

What you are considering for both “Spanish Speakers 2” and French 2 would still give you just level 2 as the highest level completed. If you want to complete a higher level, you may want to consider courses at your local community college, where language courses go at a much faster pace. Two semesters of college foreign language may count for three years of high school foreign language (check the http://doorways.ucop.edu listings for your local community college).

The reason I was given the course is because regular Spanish was full…and yes I was considering taking the second course at a community college over the summer and taking my AP spanish senior yr(that would make it 3 yrs) but the limit a hs student can take at cc is 3 units/term and Spanish is either 4 or 5…I guess what I really want to know is will it have a high impact on my chances of acceptance if I only take 2 years? If so I’ll just take French 2 and explain my situation to the French teacher so she can help me out…I also have friends who offered to tutor me so maybe that would work out
