Only ACADEMIC awards?

Can I put down some awards I won for piano? Is that considered "academic"?

maybe you can put that under extracurriculars? like under piano, say you won this and that

I think this section should be strictly academic awards. Put piano awards under extracurricular activities

Lol-we posted that exactly at the same time :)

Hey- I just posted this below, but I'll try again here.

Should I list that I was a National Merit Commended student in the academic award section? What about NHS? (I know that is a totally stupid "award," but I've heard that ad coms wonder if it isn't there.)

Also, should I list the leadership awards I received? Thanks for any help!

ok...would this sound conceited if I put down "5th out of 391 in Local Chem. Olympiad" as opposed to "5th place in Local Chem. Olympiad"?

On the one hand, I don't want the admissions officers to think it was 5th out of 10 or something like that, but I also don't want to appear conceited.

Yeah, just make it a little, hmm... I don't know, how about 5/391 at Local Chem Olympiad

yeah i put both national merit and NHS under academic awards

cherry, nah that doesnt sound conceited. youre explaining the award, thats all.

take out the local.
hahaha - makes it sound bigger.

well, if it's the local level, i'd leave it in...don't want to scuttle your chances with percieved "misrepresentation" =).

NHS is an award???? in our school it's a club!

Yeah, in my school, you have to be nominated and selected by a panel to become a member. It's supposedly "quite an honor," and there is this big fancy ceremony with certificates and whatnot to mark one's acceptance into it.

:)

I put NHS on academic awards, too. It's similar at our school (selection by a panel based on an application process, etc.) and it's also technically considered a club, but we don't actually do anything, so if I had put it in the EC's section it would haev said something like "4 hours a year".

Do you think Odyssey of the Mind awards could go under the academic award section? I didn't have room for some of those awards on the line under ECs. It's sort of academic.

"and there is this big fancy ceremony with certificates and whatnot to mark one's acceptance into it."

Haha, our ceremony is like a cult's. It's hilarious.

Same here,

they light candles after each executive member gives a speech. Then all the new members line up, and we sign our names on this blank piece of parchment before we walk across the stage and become officially inducted. Oh yeah, we also need to raise our hand and swear to some oath. If that's not cult like, I don't know what is.

Heh, we're nominated/chosen by a panel; we have candles and speeches at initiation.

Our NHS is basically another Key Club, so we're also a real club, too. I'm President, and I recruit people for volunteer hours at various events/charities. So we really do do something, and it's conceivable that you could put around 2-5 hours a week into our NHS.

it's so great because almost all of our student body gets inducted into NHS.... how special is that, huh?

Hahaha, yeah I LOVE the NHS oath. Go pointless institutions! (The only thing our NHS does is sponser a blood drive once a year.)

How about a drama award? I can't put it under EC coz i don't do drama as an EC

i'd still put it under EC.
