Oops! 894 UCLA Applicants Told Admitted by Mistake

Report from the LA Times April 11, 2012

UCLA officials are apologizing for sending out letters to 894 seniors telling them they were admitted. The students remain on the waiting list.

The error occurred when updated notices of fin. aid were sent out which included the line "Once again congratulations on your admission and hope this information will assist you in making your decision."

In 2009, UCSD notified 28,000 students incorrectly. At UCSB in 2010 60 applicants were told they were admitted. All the students received apologies from university officials.

Yes a mistake was made. Not sure why this is on the USC forum…

a distraction from more serious events at USC

Lolol I love the fact that you posted this in the USC forum.

Let’s spell it together: s-c-h-a-d-e-n-f-r-e-u-d-e

OK, class dismissed. :)

^lol. Schadenfreude!!!

I would think not. USC would much rather have that problem today than the one it has.

Snowdog,
No one is making light of the tragic events of this morning. These comments have no relation to that terrible news. It is not USC engaging in schadenfreude, in any case. This was nothing more than a silly observation about Georgia Girl noting rival UCLA’s mistake in this forum.

I think this is heartbreaking for the students affected. They were close enough to admission that they were on the waitlist, so getting an email welcoming them to the Bruin family must have felt so wonderful.

I think all of us care about the individual kids, and when universities make mistakes in mailings, I suppose I feel sorry for everyone–even the universities. They do not intend for anyone’s feelings to get hurt, I’m sure. But errors do occur.

Frankly, I’m not sure any school is immune to disasters, small or large. It’s hard to send our precious kids out in the world.

^Yes. Well said, Madbean.

Becoming a parent renders each of us a hostage to fate.

Today is not the day to post this kind of thing.

So the OP posted this thread in an attempt to make fun of UCLA? Really OP, really? Do you really take the rivalry so seriously that you have to laugh at how UCLA messed up in an admissions decision and sent wrong information to students? Does it bring you joy to know there were families that were heartbroken to know their child were admitted to a good school, only to find out they weren’t? That just riles you up doesn’t it? Makes you proud to be a Trojan huh? And don’t give me that bs excuse of “I’m just posting info…” because if you were, you’d have posted this on the UCLA CC thread and not the USC CC thread. Why did you post this here if you weren’t trying to elicit some sort of pro-USC, anti-UCLA bias?

Grow up OP. For all the garbage you give me for being a ■■■■■, I say from now on you can speak for yourself.

is this the true Trojan spirit? i guess not.

I hope not. I’m getting ready to send my S2 to USC this Fall, and this OP makes me not want to. It’s poor taste. BTW, what’s schadenfreude?

Schadenfreude means happiness at the misfortune of others.

Georgia Girl has been a helpful, consistent and positive poster. Can we cut her a little slack? Her motives may have just been for interest-sake and not some nasty-minded schadenfreude glee.

this thread is already on the UCLA page… kinda unnecessary to post it on SC’s page. giving us a bad image… if you want to bash on them just go to UCLA’s page or something…

Absolutely agree with Doame. GG consistently posts threads of interest to the USC community. Cut her some slack!

at least this is better than SMCguy’s post in the ucla forum where he joked about USC being the university of south central with a link an article about the 2 usc students who were killed. (the post was deleted by a moderator)
