OOS kid whose HS doesn't rank

I'm an OOS student who applied to UT Austin. My HS in NY does not rank the students and I was wondering what process the admission staff goes by to admit or decline. A second part of the question is whether or not a late February decision would be expected for out of state applicants too.

It is 100% based on rank, so you are out of luck.

I’m just kidding. UT isn’t dumb enough to only look at rank, they will also look at GPA and SAT.

The order of importance goes:
Rank
GPA
SAT & Extra Curricular

I asked a UT admissions guy about the order of importance.

I do believe though, that based on your GPA, UT assigns you a “rank”. I may be wrong though

MrDrProfessorSir is correct.

From what I’ve gathered, UT will take into account the rigor of your coursework and your unweighted GPA to assign a “rank”. If you wanna read up about the different factors they look at when making decisions, look up “UT Austin academic index and personal achievement index”.

Also, b3462817, I’m in the same boat as you. OOS school that doesn’t rank.

UT does not consider GPA at all. They consider rank (which is based on GPA) and rigor of school record as the most important factors. Next they consider test scores, essays, ECs, talent/ability, volunteer work and work experience.

If your school does not rank UT will assign a rank based upon your GPA and how it compares to the top and median GPA of your class based upon the profile provided by the high school.

So you think it helps or hurts to have them decide your rank?

IMHO and from others I’ve talked to, it hurts the student the closer they are to the 10% mark but helps kids that may fall above the 25% mark. Again just discussion and nothing else.

Well ti depends. If your rank in HS is very low, it hurts you. At UT, you are compared to pretty much the smartest kids in the state, so, in my opinion it hurts you.

But take this with a grain of salt… UT will put a lot of consideration into the rank they assign you.

In fact, I believe UT assigns eveybody a rank regardless if they have a HS rank or not. So don’t let this stress you out too much.
