OOS Merit Scholarships

Disappointed. By the posted standards I should be 10000 but my school doesn’t rank. They guessed wrong and only awarded 7500.

We did the recent NPC (OOS daughter has not been formally accepted yet, however, her “hack” for activation code changed this week) and with her stats (32 ACT, 4.05W and no class rank), merit estimate came up as zero. Last time I did it a few months ago, merit estimate was $7,500. So, we’re not optimistic at this point.

Most OOS freshmen receiving merit scholarships from Clemson would save 10-15% of the total cost over 4 years ($210-230K conservatively for tuition, boarding, meals, flights home, etc…), unless their rank/SAT is very high. Clemson is expensive for OOS students, merit or not.

Check your iRoar portal even if you have checked the calculator. My son had an additional scholarship we weren’t expecting when we looked today.

@SDC9160 My OOS D was accepted a couple wks ago and had same basic stats as your D regarding ACT, GPA and school that doesn’t rank. She accepted the spot and we checked her iRoar account tonight. She was awarded merit scholarship at $7500/yr.

Thanks for the info @cegfraser. We assumed she’d be in the $7,500 range, so that is encouraging news.

Disappointed in the OOS merit aid for a top student with a 1490/5.02 accepted to Health Sciences. USC Columbia will be much less expensive to attend with the generous scholarships they are offering.

Most high schools that do not rank will still give colleges the range, such as top 10% or 25%, when the colleges request that info.

@Scarlet1 Don’t know about Health Sciences, but for Civil Engineering (my son’s major) Clemson is ranked much higher than USC (#30 vs #116 in the US by CollegeFactual, for example). I don’t mind paying more for quality. Top schools rarely offer much aid to students in general. Granted Clemson is not Ivy, but it is still in the top 10% of all public schools in the US.

Are the listed scholarships on iRoar annual amounts?

@aa9111 yes, annual amounts.

I called Friday and was told all acceptance that went out aren’t receiving merit aid. They have no more money left. So that answer my decision. Sorry Clemson no merit aid… Ridiculous. When other schools have given 54,000. To 85,000…

So, those who see merit amount in iRoar, did you have mention of merit money in acceptance packet? Just received today and no mention so assume nothing. Great stats from a non ranking HS. Didn’t log into iRoar yet.

My assumption is that if there is no mention of merit/scholarship in the acceptance letter, it’s probably not happening.

Yes nothing mentioned. I did call and they said anyone getting admissions is not getting merit. They are out of money.

I am wondering how “out of money” is an accurate response? So that would mean, as the the last wave of priority decisions are sent out, that those who applied after 12/1 and getting responses after 2/15 would get absolutely nothing -regardless of stats??? Just sounds off. Like @jmar19 said, other schools are giving significant merit scholarships. My son was awarded merit from 6 other schools.

The website states that to be considered for scholarships you must apply by Dec 1. There’s no guarantee of money if you apply after that. So, yes, it’s reasonable for them to have allotted all the money to those who applied by then, especially given the high caliber and volume of applicants this year.
Each school does merit money their own way so what your student receives at another institution has no bearing on what Clemson offers them.

My son applied prior to the deadline. Around 11/01. And I was surprised that the financial aid office said that as well. However I read other post that people called and were told the same thing. They are out of money for merit scholarships. I wish I was wrong but that’s what I was told on Friday(02/15).

@Baxter126 maybe I was not clear. My son applied September.

So, after some communication with Financial aid/Scholarships, I received clarification. Maybe “out of money” was not the greatest phrase…they have allotted all Merit Scholarships that have been earned. Not that they are out of money…anyone who did not receive one, did not fit criteria.
If you are from a non-ranking HS, they look at your “school profile, WGPA comparisons with other students applying with similar GPA scales, past applicant info from that school, the strength and rigor of the HS curriculum, the number of As VS Bs…” While they state that students not in top 10% with high test scores will be considered for merit, they NEVER award scholarships to those who are not at least in top 15%.
I am sure a lot of our kids have some deciding to do…Congratulations to all who have been accepted. I truly believe our kids will end up where they are meant to be!!!
