Is it easier or harder to get into Berkeley if you're an OOS student? Does it make a difference?

Typically harder, but they are trying to increase OOS enrollment, so give it a shot if you’re in the range?

Where are you from?
I got in as OOS so anyone can get in…trust me, LOL.

But jk, I heard it’s typically supposed to be higher. BUT then again I also heard they’re simultaneously supposed to compare you to only those in your state and/or those you applied from your high school. So if no one applies or your state is one that is low on the education list (where education isn’t that high of a priority), then it might be easier…? That’s my guess and that’s also maybe why I got in, lol

Lemon Cat:

What were your stats, if you don’t mind me asking ?. My son has applied to Berkeley and UCLA.

2300 SAT, 34 ACT

3.7 unweighted gpa

top 3% of his high school class

lots of APs

somewhat weak though, on ECs.

I’m from Florida. I go to a public school. And I also have 3.7 gpa and 2300 sat lol

@floridadad

i’m oos from washington state, got in with a 1940 sat, 30 act, 3.8 unweighted, 4.47 weighted, top 10% with strong extra curriculars

Class rank does not matter for UC.

OOS students have a higher minimum GPA for UC eligibility, but that is irrelevant for Berkeley, where admissions standards are much higher than minimum UC eligibility.

UC admissions GPA is calculated based on grades in the a-g course list in 10th and 11th grades, with +1 for up to 8 semesters of honors, AP, or college courses. However, OOS students won’t be able to use honors courses as +1 for UC admissions GPA because only California high schools’ courses are certified at http://doorways.ucop.edu . Berkeley’s comprehensive review does see all courses and grades, though.

Remember also that different divisions (L&S, Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Design, Natural Resources) have different levels of selectivity, and different majors in Engineering can also differ.

Bump. Just checked my navaince and 3 people have applied form my H.S. and 2 got in, the stats were fairly mediocre 4.0 weighted 1950-2000ish sats. Hopefully that is a good sign!

Oops, sorry I missed this xD Pretty late, haha, but my stats are:
-2020 SAT and 32 ACT (not as good as a lot of people here at Cal)
-4.0 UW, 4.8ish W, 8 AP classes and the rest of the core classes were all honors of some kind
-Top 2% of my class
-President for 2 years of a club I founded, secretary to a few language clubs, 200+ community service hours at a hospital, library, and political activism center in my city, and 5 years of National Honor Society
-Although it was a big high school (about 1,000 kids), 99% ended up either going to the community college here or to the state college here. I can only name about 10 kids who ended up going out of state, and I know of none who applied to Berkeley.

Good luck to your son! :)
