OOS Semi non-trad transfer - Please Chance Me?

Could someone please chance me? I am OOS from Arizona.

Stats
-23 y/o (will be 24 when I actually started classes)
-My HS GPA is low, 2.75. I graduated in 2006. Did not take SAT/ACT.

-Took time off. Started at ASU part time in Summer 2010. Went part time until now to decide what I wanted to go to school for. Will be going FT this year, hoping to xfer to William and Mary for Fall 2012.

-ASU GPA: 3.8 (could be 3.9 after this year)

-Will be considered OOS.

-I will have most of my general ed classes done (will need another year of foreign language though, and 1 calculus class).

-I did a dual-enrollment program while in HS. I didn't do that great in it and I have 2-3 Ws and 1 F in a French class from my sophomore year of HS (2004). This was over 5 years ago though, hopefully it will not hurt me too badly?

WHAT I WANT TO APPLY FOR
I'm interested in applying for the 5-year BA/MAT program in teacher education. I would like to double major in History and Biology so that I can be certified to teach Biology and Social Studies to high school students. I am finding that I truly love learning, reading, and my academics.

Also, I am taking a full load this semester (fall 2011) and next semester (spring 2012) in preparation of transferring.

Fall courses:
BIO 100 - The Living World (haven't taken any college-level sciences)
FRE 101 - Intro French
MAT 170 - Precalculus
REL 100 - Religions of the World
HST 103 - Western Civilization

Tentative spring courses:
CHM 101 - Introductory Chemistry
FRE 101 - Intro French
MAT 226 - Statistics
Literature course
Non-western perspectives course

I was working FT the past year at ASU, which is part of the reason I was only going part time. I found part-time employment now so that I'm able to focus more on my academics and am able to take a full course load.

Also, would it be better for me to take more advanced (300 level?) classes for the history and religion courses? I am in a 300-level Gender, Science, and Technology accelerated summer class right now, and am enjoying it very much and can handle the reading/writing load just fine. I just was worried that too many 300-level classes might look funny to the adcom, but then I also thought at the same time, it would show my academic aptitude and desire for a challenging academic and liberal arts curriculum. Any advice?

Glad to hear you’re interested in transferring.

How many semesters were you part time at ASU and how many credits were you taking when you were? Feel free to explain that you were part-time due to a F/T job. We like to see students who want to be F/T here at W&M take 15 CR or so per semester before transferring. If you apply for Fall 2012 you’ll have only one completed F/T semester for us to review and the Committee would likely prefer additional F/T semesters so depending on how much course work you’ve done, you may want to consider applying for Spring 2013. Since your HS record is over 5 years old it won’t play a huge factor especially as you continue to accumulate college course work.

The proposed classes you’re taking look solid. As for taking 300-level courses, that’s up to you. Just remember that the more topical they are, the harder they are to transfer. We recommend sticking to courses that are likely to transfer and that are common to all colleges (micro and macro econ, intro to psych, etc.).

You mentioned FR 101 as both a fall and a spring course. We’d encourage you to take FR 101 in the fall and FR 102 in the spring.

Your GPA is strong so continue to keep up the work you’re doing now.

Hope this helps!

Thanks WM Admissions for getting back to me. To give you some additional info:

I suppose I should explain a little better about the FT/PT semesters. I’ve taken classes during the summer sessions, where the courses are condensed. At ASU, FT in the summer is considered 6 credits (2 3-credit classes, each class 5 weeks long). Technically, according to ASU, I was full time in the summer of 2010, and full time in the summer of 2011 (this semester). I was part-time, only taking two classes, during the fall and spring semesters.

I do have some college coursework from a dual-enrollment program while I was in HS. I’ve got Eng 101 and 102, Psych 101, two Political Science courses that are fairly general (ie: American Government), and a History course (some other electives too, but I doubt they will transfer, such as a PE I needed to take for HS graduation). That is about 26 credits from those, I’m not sure if the adcom would count those in with my completed credits or not.

So, with Fall 2011 taking a full load, I would have 59 credits, assuming everything transferred over. I believe that would make me transfer in as a junior.

-Also, I did mean to type French 102 for the spring 2012 semester. Thank you for the advice though.

If all 59 credits transfer that would give you junior standing at W&M. While DE courses are college courses, if you took them while enrolled in high school we consider those part of your high school record for the most part.

It sounds like you’ve never taken more than 2-3 classes at a time. That being the case, the Committee is going to want to see two semesters of full-time course work (5 classes). Be sure to send your mid-semester grades for the spring semester and be sure to let us know in the application why you were part-time and if you took any time off, why.
