I’m an out of state student and I’ll be attending NYU this fall for engineering (I live in ga). Any students know what I should bring and how I should get there? (Car or plane?) My parents had the idea of packing my absolute necessities in a large suitcase and a backpack and then mailing me other miscellaneous things and then flying to NY. Another option was packing whatever I could and buying anything else at a Walmart or target in NY. On that note, what school supplies do I need as a college student? In addition, how do you handle moving out of the dorm for winter break and summer? I know I need to completely clear out my dorm for the summer so how do I handle that? Multiple trips? Mailing some things back home and then fitting everything in a suit case (taking into consideration that I’ll have a lot of clothes for different types of weather.
Thanks
- Car vs. Plane IMO coming via car is ideal because you can bring more stuff from home without worrying about extra baggage fees.
- How to bring all of your stuff over I did the "bring all the essentials from home and buy the rest locally". To me it made more sense than mailing since shipping is expensive and we'd have to buy a lot of stuff anyways.
- Supplies There's a lot and NYU probably has a recommended packing list. You can Google and check.
- Leaving for summer You have a couple of options. I rented a storage space with a few friends and stored all my extraneous stuff for the summer. Others mailed everything home.
We will be bringing only what can fit in 3 checked bags (one each for dad, me, and D) and 3 carry-ons/ We’ve found that space bags-where you suck all the air out with a vacuum-are worth their weight in gold. D was able to triple the amount that her first bag held using those. The rest we will buy on location at any one of the big box stores-we’ve already scouted out where they are in relation to the college.
We flew Southwest (2 bags checked free) for college dropoff. We mailed a box, too. As a student, you can get Amazon Prime for free for six months (just don’t forget to cancel if you don’t want to pay for it). You can have lots of things delivered without paying shipping.
My friend who went to MIT (from CA) did this:
2 luggages and 1 carryon on the plane
Pick up everything else at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
Bed, Bath, and Beyond has a good pickup program for college students in that you can order online, and pick it up at the BBB nearest your college. That’ll save you some space. I know others are shipping their things, or doing it through Amazon Prime.
Agree, BED Bath and Beyond.
The Container store ships to the university; UB held the boxes within the week of move in.
I go to a college that is like 7 hours from my home. Regardless of how your packing situation works out, I suggest to only pack what you need and to leave some space in your luggage for any gifts/keepsakes you might get when you get to your school.
