OOS Tuition --Resident or Non-resident?

Hi all,

I am moving to LA this upcoming January. I will be living with relatives and plan to attend Santa Monica College and follow the IGETC path. I will be making an effort to become a resident of CA (I am from MO and wish to remain in CA even after school) so I will get a new driver's license, register to vote, etc. I know it is nearly impossible to gain residency at a UC without having a parent(s) that are CA residents, but if I am considered a resident by the time I want to transfer (fall of 2014), will I be able to enroll at a CSU as a resident? Or will I have to be registered as a non-resident (I am not sure if they do the financial independence check that the UCs do).

Hope this makes sense. Anyone able to help?

Wait…why is it nearly impossible to attend a UC school if you’re not a resident? You can just transfer and then you’ll be considered a trasfer student, much easier.

Sorry, should have been clearer. I meant that it is nearly impossible to be classified as a resident at a UC if your parents are not residents of CA.

Why do you believe this to be so?

I actually, moved to LA in April 2011 and stayed till June 2012.

It had been over a year, I got my CA driver’s license, registered to vote, worked in the state, I did all of the following.

BEWARE this is a key note I did not… pay attention to.

My one year and one day had passed to become a resident for attending college in California and I could not become a resident, why?

I don’t know if it is required for all schools but the ones I have found out, must FILE AS A INDEPENDENT on your tax returns… and you can’t just ask to get your name off your parents taxes (the day before)… it doesn’t work like that.

You have to, I believe make $12,000 a year to become independent and I think also, you have to be off your parents tax returns for 1-2 years?

I don’t remember the exact details.

The schools told me that as long as I am under my parents taxes (I am 21 years old) … I will be a Washington resident because that is where my parents reside.
