I have a couple of questions concerning Open Houses. My son wants to go, but I want to know if it's worth it...money's kind of tight.

1) If you've already attended one, what sort of things did you do (a tour/admissions discussion/matriculation/etc).
2) Were you able to talk with faculty?
3) If YES to the second question, was there free time to talk to several faculty members?
4) What are the dorms like? If my son goes, he'd be doing an overnight.
5) What time does the event start (morning/evening/8:30AM, I've heard/read different answers)?

My son went to one of the admitted students weekends a couple of years ago. As open houses go, it was run very well I thought.

There were the usual tours and info sessions, but also some mock classes with different profs (it was Saturday). He did the overnight and stayed up much of the night talking with students. He had already done overnights at a couple of other schools.

We flew up on Friday night (on cheap Southwest flights) and started the activities Saturday morning. He roomed with a student in the dorms on Saturday night (bring a sleeping bag), which are pretty typical--not too old, not too new. I believe they had some planned activities that night, as well. We picked him up late Sunday morning, but well before the other students were up. We waited til noon for the bookstore to open so he could buy a "hoodie," which at $50 is the indication that he wanted to go to Case.

He said decided within an hour or so of arriving on campus that he wanted to go to Case over his previous choice, based on the campus, the social environment, and the mock classes.

In our case, it was defintely a worthwhile trip!

Son attended an over-nighter in the fall. He took tours, attended academic sessions with professors. He got to ask them questions. He got a real taste of college life. He went out with the guys. He made the free time to seek out faculty. He did not care if it made him late for the next session. It was extremely worth while. He really came away with a good feel of the student academic culture and the sense that he could call the place home for 4 years. Case is a gem.

He figures a dorm is a dorm. For him this is not a criteria worth evaluating. If it's bad, then it will be a bonding experience. If it's good, then there is no problem.

I'm glad to hear the positive responses. We found a date that works--now if only we could find a stupid flight!

I have a list of airlines I've checked for decent flights (to no avail)...if you can think of others, let me know.

Southwest (limited flight availability)
Northwest (none that service in the afternoon)
American (only one that's feasible, but a tight squeeze (like <30 mins for security and check-in))
Delta (none that service in the afternoon)
Air Tran (doesn't serve CLE)
United (wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too expensive, plus no realistic flights)
Continental (none in afternoon)
Midwest (doesn't serve our airport)
US Airways (doesn't serve CLE)
JetBlue (doesn't serve our airport)
Frontier (doesn't serve CLE)
Spirit (doesn't serve CLE)

I mean, besides Alaskan and Hawaiian Airlines, I think I've checked just about every major (and minor) air line available! :D

An alternative for you is to fly into Pittsburgh. The Airport is only a little of over 2 hours away from Case. Pittsburgh has a newer very modern and full featured airport. You'll have no problem renting a car. The Cleveland airport has to be some distance away from Case, so your net increase will be less. Just a thought...

If you do go into Cleveland airport, you can take the Rapid train directly to Case's campus. I don't remember what the fare is, since they give us public transport passes included in our tuition, but its definitely cheaper than renting a car (just don't expect a glamorous train ride).

An alternative airport is Akron, 40 miles from Cleveland.

As was stated, if you fly into Hopkins (CLE), you can take the RTA and save on a rental car, parking, or taxi fare. A taxi from Hopkins to campus is about $40.

CaseSpartan10- that's good to know! I'm planning to go to one of the open houses, and I was wondering about transportation between the airport and campus.

I’m debating going to an open house. I’ve never visited the campus or Cleveland for that matter.
I live in Texas, which isn’t very near Ohio…
Don’t know if I could afford a flight up there.
