Is anyone else going to the open house at Rose Hill campus on October 18th? I've never been to NYC before, and am totally excited to see the campus!
Also, how useful are these open houses? I've been to a couple at U Chicago and Notre Dame and they really only seemed to spout back the FAQ's from the admissions websites.
Fordham is easily my top realistic choice (right after Chicago which is a total pipe dream) and I love the idea of their honors program. I've looked at a bunch of honors programs at my state schools but they don't seem to match up at all. Any input on that, current students, etc.?
One more thing, I know how much everyone hates those "chance-me" threads, but I am just wondering as to the feasibility of getting into the Fordham honors program. I have about a 3.4 unweighted GPA which has been steadily rising out of the dreckage 2.8 land of sophomore year and a 1480 SAT w/o writing. I am well aware that this is nowhere near their average GPA but my grades show a sharp upward trend and should get even higher after this semester. We don't rank, but I should be in the top 25% of a highly competitive class of 170. Before senior year I also didn't have the opportunity to take any AP classes, but I am now enrolled in 3 (Spanish, Euro, Bio) and self-studying for the Stat Exam. My ECs include editor in chief of my school's literary magazine, president and resident stage manager for the drama club, 2 years on the varsity swim team, and 4 years in the student ambassador "gold key" program.
My essays and recs should be somewhere near fantastic, is there any way that they could rectify sub-par grades?
Any help on this mass of inquiry would be awesome!

First of all, congrats on salvaging your gpa and working hard! Your SAT scores are fabulous. I dont know the specifics on the Honors Program at either LC or RH, but I do know its a very, very small number who are offered. Its also a very rigorous program that lasts all four years, so think hard about that. Its very special, but its not for everyone.

However, the Freshman Honors program is not the only “honors” program that Fordham offers students. There are honors programs in Business, Journalism, Liberal Arts and some special programs or “Centers”, available to upper classmen. They are aimed at the top students, typically above a 3.5 cumulative gpa (determined mostly after freshman year, but sometimes also after/during sophomore year). Most of these are by invitation of the faculty. So check out the Fordham website thoroughly before you go to campus, and make a list of questions to ask.

Fordham Rose Hill has the the Rose Hill Society, which is an honorary group of students who are “ambassadors” for the school and give most of the student/family tours.

I do think that your SAT scores put you on solid ground for an academic scholarship offer. So that is good news.

Visiting campus is a very good way to get a feel for what is going on during the school year, meet and greet students, talk to administrators and professors.

Fordham College at Rose Hill is an awesome school, with some very deep programs, and excellent faculty. Its a very attractive campus in a unique location, adjacent to the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Gardens, but also the Belmont district-Arthur Ave. which is home to an authentic Little Italy with some of the finest dining in New York, that is very reasonable in price.

Depending on what hotel you are staying at (likely Manhattan) you simply go to Grand Central Terminal and take the Metro North train to Fordham Road and the campus is right there at your footsteps. (If you are staying closer to Lincoln Center and Central Park you can also hop the RamVan from Lincoln Center campus which takes you directly to Rose Hill). Avoid the subway, if you can.

UChicago and Notre Dame are each very different schools from Fordham. I think you will find that Fordham holds its own academically and socially. Its a typical college campus, but its in the city (Bronx) which makes it unique. Also be aware that there is a lot of building going on, or planned to begin soon, at both campuses.

I recommend you check the departments you are interested in at the Fordham website.

Good luck!

My D did the Open House at the LC campus last October, and we went back and visited several other times as well. The Open House was very very helpful to her in making her decision to accept their offer of admission versus the other schools that offered her admission. You really get a feel for the campus and see if it is a good match for you by going to the Open House. I strongly encourage it.

Thank you so much to both of you! I hadn’t heard about the Rose Hill Society but I will defenitally be looking into that, I love showing off my school now, probably even more so in college! I’ll be going straight to campus from the airport so transportation isn’t a huge concern but thanks for the tips about the train. One thing I’ve found about Fordham mailings is that they aren’t particularly personal, I would really like to get in contact with an admissions representative but I don’t know which one I should talk to, or should I just call the 1-800 number on the website? This whole process is very confusing but also totally exhilarating.
