Open House Luncheon

I had a question about the Open House Luncheon. We reserved our spot, but I’m assuming its with the major that my son was admitted into. Other than the lunch, which we had to reserve, can he go to other departments or majors events and discussions during the open house such as panel discussions or meet and greet with faculty?

We are planning on getting there late Thursday and leaving by Friday night. Will we miss a whole lot if we skip Saturday? We couldn’t get a room in SLO for Friday night and would have to reserve in Pismo instead. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s worth the added cost. We’ve already done all the tours last week.

I think you are free to mingle, it’s tricky to see much beyond your particular major on Friday because there is a lot of time overlap among the activites. It’s best to plan to eat your reserved luncheon but there will be lots of pizza & such at various locations on Friday. If you can arrange the Saturday stayover you will probably be glad you did, that is the day the club booths are set up and you have time to see & talk to students up close. We missed that last year and I’m sorry we had to forgo the Saturday fun.

@Anyhope, If your son is sure he wants to change his major, I would attend the Friday afternoon activities with whatever department he thinks he wants to switch into. They don’t take roll, so it won’t be obvious that you are a “visitor”. I would just make sure to be at the end of the line when lunch is served, so you make sure they have plenty of extra food before eating. (You wouldn’t want someone to go without food, because you showed up!) I’ve been to 3 of these Admitted Student days and the departments we visited always had extra food, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. (FYI - the MatE department served us homemade ice cream made with liquid nitrogen for dessert!) Saturday is a lot of fun if your student is the type that wants to see everything club related and would engage in conversation with the students manning their booths. My son’s were all pretty shy about that and didn’t care to stay at the Saturday club extravaganza very long. I think there is a rodeo and a concert, and robotics competitions, and a tractor pull, if your student would enjoy those things. Mine never wanted to go to these things with just their parents!

My son said he wanted to check out the clubs so Saturday sounds like the best day to do that. He isn’t really interested in all the other stuff either, but I want him to go because when we were last there he said the school felt too small and the town too quiet. I’m hoping he will get a much different feel during Open House.

What exactly is the Open House Luncheon?

The individual colleges may have a luncheon on Friday for admittees and family, supporters. At least I found one on the agenda for the College of Engineering. Not sure at this point what happens there.
