OPEN THREAD: Ask an FIT Student!

For English, an SAT score of 540 or higher will allow you to register for the standard, credit-bearing english comp (EN121) class.

For Math, you need a 520 or higher for regular placement.

If you already sent them in and you’re above, you’re fine. If either score is below, you can choose to accept it and take the skills class, or call the school and ask them if you can sub your placement scores instead of your SATs. Hope everything goes well.

Hey, I have been stressing big time on my acceptance into AMC. I have an unweighted 3.46 gpa (I know low) and a weighted 4.2 with tons of honors and APs (my school is wierd with weighted stuff). My essay stressed my ambitious attitude and extra-curriculars. Do I have a chance because I have researched it and it seems that I am above the average GPA, but I just want reassurance because this school is so so competitive. So in conclusion, what is my chance of acceptance?

If you’re confident in your essay, then you probably knocked it out of the park. I can’t give you a cut and dry chance of acceptance but personally, I’d say you’re in. I managed to make it in with a 92 average, whatever that is, and essentially no extra-currics. The one thing people most often forget when applying to FIT is that general intelligence is not necessarily the primary requirement. They want people with talent and ambition that can adapt and learn quickly. I think you’ll be good.

Hi, Hungery student
I am applying for Fashion Design majoy. As it showed on ***** account, all the require documents were received. Do you know whether they will start review my application right away or they will wait till the deadline pasts?
I have been hearing tons of people complaining about the adimisson office, I am kind worried about my application process. Is it true? I don’t want a professor dissapeared while processing my portfolio!

I really can’t tell you when they’re going to review your portfolio, but you should hear back by April. They have thousands of applications to sort so it will be a while. Admissions tends to get backed up around this time.

I will be so nervous arround that time!
Thanks for your reply!:)

Hello HungryStudent, it’s my first time on the website, I subscribed only because of you. I am an international student (american born abroad actually) and i applied for the Advertising and Marketing Communication major, I send everything, but the transcripts as you may know have to go through the World Education Services. The point is that I heard a lot of people complaining about them and how late they’re and since the deadline is getting closer, I am seriously worried about not being given priority consideration.

I want to know if this major is competitive? Do you know some international students that have been accepted even after the deadline? And how the acceptation letter like do they say you’re accepted or that there’s not vacant places left? Do they propose you to go back the next semester?
OR WHAT? Help me please cause I really dont know anythin and you ve been my place once you should know how scared to death I am.

@HungryStudent, first off … I’m truly grateful for you helping us out. Really. I send out my blessings to you, haha.

Okay, so … I’m applying to FIT for Fashion Merchandising Management. It’s the school I truly want to go to.
A few months ago, when I went to the Open House for Merchandising Management, I was actually blessed with meeting a Professor …
I was sitting down, and out of every single person in that room, he came up to me. He striked a conversation and we talked about the industry, favorite fashion brands, FIT, what he does for a living, and much more. I was truly amazed … and before I left, we both shook hands, and he told me “You better come back” … and I told him I would. His name is Bob Schultz, and I believe he is a Professor in the Merchandising Management team … he’s even on the front page of the website!

ANYWAYS! … I was honored in meeting him, and without a doubt, I put that one experience in my essay, as well as what I want to do & why FIT is the school for me.
I’m confident in my essay … but now you see here, I’d like your opinion of my chances of getting in! :/.
I have a 3.27 GPA, and i’m ranked 86 out of 387 in my class. I have A LOT of Art/design classes, (Even though I’m not applying to fashion design), and my grades are well … Although, my SAT scores really suck … bad. A 1440, and they’re lower than the standards you spoke about. Sigh* …

So what do you think? … do you think, hopefully, the essay will pull me though? …
Thank you so much if you read this, and reply back. I truly appreciate it :').

Awww, thanks for the love guys!

The major is very competitive. Everything at FIT is somewhat challenging to get into. However, on that note, I know very many international students in the program, including those without priority acceptance. Heck, I didn’t even get priority acceptance for my fall semester. You probably already know this but you can double-check to see what’s been received for your application on the ***** website on the left side. They’re pretty current to the tune of about a week after they get stuff.

The acceptance letters are pretty climax-killing, honestly. You get a folder in the mail that says “congratulations!” on the outside. I don’t know anyone that’s been denied from the school, but you can always re-apply for the next semester. Spring has less applicants and therefore a high chance of acceptance, I’d assume.

I wouldn’t rule out the chance at all. If they liked you at the open house, it’s a very positive sign. There’s a very good chance that Mr. Schultz is reviewing the essays along with everyone else in the department, and remembers you.
Middling grades are not really much to worry about if you can prove yourself in the essay. If your grades are consistent or go up during your senior year, it’s a much better chance than if they’re declining. I know it’s just about the middle of the year and your transcripts were already sent in but if Senioritis took its toll on you, then try to kick butt from now on. Should there be an issue with admissions, you can always whip out your second semester grades and show your initiative. Like I’ve mentioned, FIT is not Yale. They’re looking for talent, skill, and expertise, not intelligence. You’d be surprised.
On your SAT scores, again, 1440 is not bottom of the heap. You’ll probably be taking the skills courses, and on that note, take the time you have left to work on your math skills. Take advantage of any tutoring or extra help while you can in high school. FMM is hugely dependent on them, along with Microsoft Excel. If you can significantly boost your understanding, you can ask to take the math placement and hopefully override your SAT score. Good Luck!

No problem man :'D. Thanks for the quick reply by the way! Once again, much appreciated.

Hopefully Mr. Schultz is reviewing the essays, and perhaps if he doesn’t read mine and another Professor does … they would notify him about it!
But without a doubt, my BEST GRADES are Junior and Senior year as they have risen a lot. My math grades in Junior year are actually all A’s! Senioritis has not kicked in, and so hopefully my transcripts are okay.
If I do get accepted, I will take extra tutoring and get some help in Math, most definitely. And Microsoft Excel shouldn’t be a problem, I’m very computer savvy :b. haha. Thanks for the hope though!

I have a question … the deadline is February 1st. We just got a snowy here in Boston, and I have to send my transcripts and online academic history and essay. I won’t be getting back to school until Monday … does Admissions HAVE to receive my transcripts by the 1st, or does it have to be postmarked by the first? Either way, I would rush deliver them myself to the school!
Admissions is really messy … I called and asked where I could put my clubs & achievements, he told me my essay. Well, my essay has much more important things than what I did in school! D:
Do you think I could perhaps attach a list or a resume with my Transcripts? Or will they not even look at it, or accept it?

Thanks once again!

Hi!
I applied in early October for the FMM program for 2011 at FIT. I have a 93 GPA and my essay was unique (about my twin sister & fashion) I’m in the National Honor Society(Hispanic & Regular) I am really nervous, do you think I’ll get in?

Hi HungryStudent,

Can you please explain what you mean by “priority acceptance”. My daughter applied in October and I don’t remember there being a choice for priority acceptance or early decision or anything along those lines. Hope we didn’t miss something important. Thanks.

30

Good to hear about your grades. Extracurrics should have been included in your essay, but honestly it’s not a huge deal if they’re not, they place very little weight on them. In the order of priority they’re looking for: portfolio(for art and design students), essay, grades, and then all the extra fluff. SATs do not influence admissions and are only for gen ed placement. If you rush your transcripts and can get them received by the 1st, you’ll make priority consideration, which I’ll talk more about below. If they don’t make it, you’ll still be in for regular admissions. The transcripts are official school documents and they either won’t consider or will refuse an additional resume part. I wouldn’t lose sleep unless you did something really meaningful that relates to your application, they really don’t care if you were in the marching band or played basketball or anything.

31

I can’t give an exact chance, but I’d say slam dunk if your essay was compelling.

32

It’s no big deal, priority and standard is just how they group the selection pools. It’s not an option like early action, they just take all the apps(SUNY and essay) completed before January 1st with all documentation(portfolio and transcripts) received by February, and review those before heading on to any applications they’ve gotten after. The pool of priority applicants are only judged against other priority applicants and can’t be bumped by applications they’ve gotten later. From what it sounds, your daughter made the priority deadline. It’s very rare for a class to be filled with only priority applicants unless it’s a small major like toy design.

Thanks HungryStudent. You seem to have a good grasp on the application process. Based upon what you have said, does this imply that a student who made the priority admission, but has applied for a major requiring a portfolio, will not hear anything until after February 1st at the earliest, even though the portfolio was reviewed in November? We know of 2 accepted students who received their admission at the end of January last year, one to FMM and one to Fashion Design. My daughter applied to Communication Design.

We have also heard about the “congratulations” on the outside of the envelope, makes for an anxiety filled trip to the mailbox!

^Hmmm…I’m not actually sure. I feel they -may- have moved some of the dates around, because the February requirement seems kind of late compared to mine last year- I didn’t receive priority and all of my stuff was in by the end of January, but I can’t be sure. They do send out acceptances right away to some definite “ins,” especially in the Fashion Design program, but to be honest, I can’t say I know exactly why. My best advice would be to check the account one more time to verify all documents have been received and processed, just in case something was lost along the way, and then to sit tight until March/April. If you haven’t heard from the college by the beginning of April then I would pursue the matter further.

Hi, Hungrystudent.
I took the calculus and physics AP courses and I am going take AP exams in May.
Is there any credits transfering differences between different courses?
Like calculus AB or calculus BC? Physic B or c? I know that some universities like Yale only recognize credits of calculus BC not AB. But as you said FIT is not Yale and the school website does inform that as long as the score is above 3 out of 5, the credits will be transfered.
Does that mean it doesnt matter weather i chose Physic B or C?

I honestly don’t know, you’d have to talk to admissions about that one. What I can say though, is make sure FIT will accept the credits before taking the tests. I had cumulatively 5 APs under my belt that met the score requirements, but only 1 transferred. Most history courses do not and only certain math, science, and english tests transfer. You can save yourself some time and money by checking in advance if it’s worth taking or not.

Thank you Hungrystudent!
I emailed them and they only told me that a score over 3 would recerive transfer creidit so then i called the admission office for more details. However they told me the same thing and they could only know if the credit will be transferd AFTER they evaluate my report! But I am taking the exams this May!!( btw they are so unfriendly and impatient!! :(

I have to say that YOU ARE SUCH A NICE SWEET PERSON!!
I am still going to take the exams. I studied Calculus, Physics, Psychology and Human Geography. Do you think they will transfer those credits?
Thank you again for helping!!! :))))))))))

Dear HungryStudent,

Just has everyone else has already said, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. I applied Fall 2011 for FMM as an incoming freshman. My GPA is a 3.7, my classes, however, are not all honors. I took a few honors courses and no AP classes. I come from a private school so AP courses are only offered to the top 25 students in my class. I was ranked 170 out of 400 students. I have a plethora of extracurriculars and I worked on my essay with a professor for a whole month, which I am very confident about! What do you think are my chances of getting accepted? I don’t think I can wait till April to find out, I need something to keep me sane!

P.S. - Please be as brutally honest as possible!

What does being a freshmen with advanced standing mean is it something good or bad?
