Hi, I feel really confident with my chances of being accepted but I’m already getting anxious! When do people usually start getting responses? I applied for FMM and everything was in before January 1st.

Also, do you know how hard the math needed for FMM is? Math isn’t my strongest subject, but I did do better on the SATs that you need to get out of the placement exam. I’m just wondering, is it going to be really overwhelming in the actual courses?

I know SAT scores don’t go into admissions, I’m not worried about that, just how challenging the classes will be in terms of math. I included the SAT thing because I’m hoping that since my scores are above what is needed for placement, that would be a good sign.

I send my transcripts on Monday to FIT … and paid a little extra money, and they said they were going to be there by Wednesday.
Today is Friday … and I called, they said they haven’t received them yet (after he checked my student ID).
I live in Boston, & I know that NYC got a lot of snow as well … did you guys get snow on Wednesday? We got a big storm yesterday …

anyways, my question is … do you think the snow delayed my transcripts? :/. I mean, as long as it’s post marked before Feb 1st it’s all good. But worst case scenario is that it’s lost.

On Monday I was thinking to get transcripts ready again, and call FIT to see if they have them, if not, I’ll send them out asap with tracking.
Once they receive them … I heard it takes 20 hours to be put in the system though?

Hi! I am currently a junior double majoring in theater performance and english at a private liberal arts university. I just discovered a love for fashion that I’ve had for years, hence all of the fashion magazines I collect in my room. I would like to go back to school after I graduate in 2012 for Fashion Management and Merchandising and FIT is one of the schools that I’m looking at. My current overall G.P.A is 3.1 but this semester is looking promising, so hopefully my GPA will rise, although at this point, it won’t move that drastically. I don’t have any experience in the fashion world whatsoever, but do I still have a chance in being accepted? I know that it’s an extremely competitive program. There’s also a community college that offers the degree, but I feel that going to FIT would be the smarter choice in terms of how well known the school it; I’m assuming that going to FIT vs. a community school will open a lot more doors when looking for a job. Any help is greatly appreciated!

38, Aww shucks, thanks. The staff is incredibly rude at FIT, it’s an unfortunate fact of life here. Just be persistent, prepared, and cordial and you should get pretty far, even if you need to call a few different times. Your calc and psych credits should transfer, but you might be out of luck with the others.

39 You’re in. Stop worrying. :p

40 It means you have transfer credits from an AP or other college credit courses. It’s good because you can potentially save yourself some time and not have to take all the required classes.

41 March usually. You should be fine, My roomate’s in FMM and today they learned “adding big numbers and rounding.” I cannot stress enough that FIT is not anywhere near the upper echelons of adademics. If you’re above the skills classes then you’re ahead of the game.

45 Honestly, I’m not sure what’s going on here, only admissions knows for sure. Make sure you’re sending it to the correct building, address, etc. That’s a big mistake many people make here. Good luck though.

46 Funny you mention it, FIT is actually considered a community college in the state system. People may refuse to believe it, but they’re traveling halfway around the world sometimes to attend a community college. You should be fine with a 3.1 or above, It’ll probably be a win-win for you though if you apply to both, because if for some reason you do not get in, you should hit up the CC and do a transfer for the next semester. We like transfers for some reason here.

Also, do you hear a lot of negative stuff about FMM? I hadn’t, but then I heard a lot of people consider it a joke.

I chose it because I thought it would be the major suited best for me, but that worries me a bit.

Oh, and what is your knowledge of the Honors Program? I applied, but I’m not sure if I’d want to be in it or not. I heard it’s really competitive and tons of work, so I’m not sure. At the same time I’ve heard it has a lot of benefits.

A friend of mine has a daughter in FMM, freshman year and she absolutely loves it. She said she has learned so much since September and seems to really like her teachers who have pushed her to do her absolute best work. She has had the opportunity to participate in Fashion Week twice already. I have only heard good things from her. Hope this helps.

Have you received an acceptance yet, or know of anyone who has? My daughter applied for communication design and has had all her paperwork in and portfolio reviewed by mid November. She hasn’t heard anything and it has been a long and anxious wait!!

I haven’t received an acceptance yet. I’ve heard that most people seem to receive their letters in March, or even the end of February (here’s hoping!) When I visited the school they said all letters are sent out by April 1st, but I hear that’s pretty late to be hearing back!

I haven’t heard of anyone hearing quite yet, and FIT still says people should hear around April 1st, but she could keep checking the FIT facebook page because people tend to post on the wall when they’ve been accepted!

48, FMM does attract a large majority of the vapid, less than intelligent population at the school, but if you learn to distance yourself and not be super-pretentious, you’ll do okay.

I know a few kids in the honors program, and it doesn’t seem that bad. I was lazy and just didn’t want to write the extra essay, but I could probably keep up. They take the same classes as far as I know, but they also have extra requirements like seeing a broadway show or attending a meeting once in a while. Fairly easy stuff. Extra scholarship opportunities too.

Here’s hoping for end of February as well!! I know that FIT really emphasizes the April 1st date, but let’s hope that is their own internal deadline. Last year it seems decisions were received from end of January an on, so let’s keep our fingers crossed. I agree, April 1st is late to hear considering most want deposits by May 1st, however, the IVY’s send their regular decisions out first week of April, so we can consider ourselves in good company.

HungryStudent, is the Honors Program something that can be applied to for the second year or for the second semester of the first year? Or can you only apply as an incoming freshman?

I read the honors program page on the FIT website inside and out, and it says you can apply as an incoming Freshman, but you can apply again in your Sophomore year in order to be in the program as a Junior.

In my opinion FMM depends on the professors, the time you take classes and who is in them. I was in FMM last semester and it was alright, but a lot of the girls were unfriendly, or girls coming back for a one year associate or non degree students- in the case of my night classes. I transferred into AMC and for me it is a much better fit but again, it all depends on a lot of things, if FMM is what you really want to do, you’ll be happy and do well.

5 out of my 6 classes transferred, but I was lucky that first semester FMM has a lot of classes that AMC takes at some point, most majors aren’t like that. But to transfer your major you need to essentially reapply.

Hi HungryStudent, first of all, thanks for all the help. This thread has been great! My situation is a bit strange. I graduated last year with a BS in Mech. Engineering from UC Davis, but I want to change fields and get into fashion design. Specifically, I want to apply to the Menswear Program at FIT.
Do you have any info on how difficult it is to get into this program?
How good does the portfolio need to be? I’m not a great artist, but I’ve been working hard to make an impressive portfolio.
I know I’ll knock the essay out of the park. My GPA in college was 2.92. So I’m a bit nervous about getting rejected.
Could you shed some light on the Menswear Program in general, as in what do people think about it?
Have you come across any students with a situation like mine at FIT?

I’m really unsure if I will be accepted or not for Advertising and Marketing Communications. I have took just about every type of marketing course my high school offered plus attended a charter academy part time to take honors level marketing courses. All of my academics in high school have been honors, most with A’s and a few B’s. However, I did make a C in my freshman english class. And I know FIT puts emphasis on language arts courses for students applying to AMC since it has journalism aspects to it and a lot of writing. My GPA is a 3.6 and I make mostly all A’s but my one weak subject, English, is what they care about for this particular major. :/

Let’s be real here: A C from 3 years ago is not going to affect your chances. If you can spell your name on the application, they’re not going to care.
