Ok guys, I cannot take it anymore. I applied to The Ohio State University's graduate program in Operations Research--my application was completed late March. My application was turned in by the application deadline but my supplemental materials(ie: GRE, letter of rec.) were somewhat late I must know will they let me in or did I apply to late and am SOL.

Here is the pertinent data:

GRE SCORES: Q-730 V-560 Analytical-3.5-----I fear this is a deal breaker since they say
they MAY refuse admission to anyone who does not get >= 4.5 on the
analytical.

EDUCATION: BA Mathematics(3.26 overall); No research; letters of rec. OK.

Experience: Currently teaching high school mathematics; have been teaching for two years
now. Iraq vet. I really want to go to The OSU because their program is in the
top 30 and Ohio allows veterans to pay instate tuition even if they are not
residents. I am ready to leave California and I have never been to the Great
Lake region.

There you have it. Do I have a snowball's chance in hell??? This is the only school I applied to. All or nothing. Please Advise.

Well…I don’t think I can give any constructive advice since I’m not familiar with operations research at Ohio State Uni.

Just a general comment. I don’t think GRE will either make or break your chance at a particular school but your GPA seems a bit low. In addition, if you don’t have research experience and recs are not well-written by your profs, that will really cause some problems.

Waiting on Ohio State as well (I won’t get in; 1080 GRE, 3.1 GPA), but you’ve a much better chance than I do.
Can’t say that I know your chances because I’m totally unfamiliar with the program, but good luck, no idea when they’re going to get back to us. You definitely did not apply too late; they didn’t close everything until April 17th (this past Friday).

I used to live in Wisconsin and loved the friendly culture of the midwest. You may have to get used to the cold weather and the fact that winter lasts six to eight months a year but the cold keeps the riff raff out and the people are very tolerant and friendly. Good luck with your grad studies.

I’m assuming you are applying for a masters, if so I think you have a decent chance. If you are going for a PhD then you probably don’t.

Your quant is lower than ideal, so is your writing score. Operations research is very math heavy, and is actually in the math department in many schools. They are expecting you to destroy the math section. Your GPA is fine though despite what other people are saying. OSU is a big school so their department will probably be pretty big, and therefore admit large amounts of people. I’d say you have a decent chance.

What did you do while you served in iraq? If it was operations related I’d say you are probably in. If you don’t get in I would retake the the GRE and apply again.

Yes Euler, I applied for the Masters. I am worried about my writing score also; my statement of purpose was well written and I hope it will save me–it should remove most doubt concerning my ability to form a coherent thought.

I must admit, I am surprised that you think my Q score is a little low. I was pretty proud of it until you came along. LOL. If you think that is low, I won’t even mention how poorly I did on the math subject test. To my credit, I did not study at all for it–me so lazy. I will be homicidal if my gre stops me from getting in(not really–but you get the point).

I cannot believe it; I just checked Ohio State’s online application site and I did not get in. Darn! Guess I will get a state job and maybe try again next year. This was the only school I applied to; I guess it was not meant to be. Good luck to all of you.

OSU’s Ops program is outstanding. This has been an extremely competitive year for grad school applications across all disciplines. You may want to call Admissions. Let them know you will reapply next year. Ask them for honest advice on how to become more competitive for their program.

Best of luck to you and thank you for your service.

Hey, I’m sorry to hear you did not get in. I would definitely retake the GREs again. Try to crush the quant, you should be able to do it since you have at least 6 months to study for it.

Some other advice would be to talk to the professors there. Let them know what your intentions are and your situation, context is always important. I don’t think it’s a good idea to ask “what do I need to do to improve my application” because a lot of grad schools don’t want to say, bump up your GRE score. Why? Because what if you do bump up your GRE score? Then do they have to admit you? So I think in general they do not like to comment on that.

But you know at least one aspect you could improve in, the GRE scores. Maybe you could pick up an OR book and read it on your own. Show that you are self motivated and not getting admissions is just a minor setback, not a big one. Mention that you independently studied a grad level book perhaps.

Is there anyway to get back in touch with some of your professors/recommenders? Just to keep one foot in the academia door?
