Operations Research with Econ Minor???

hey guys, I will be attending SEAS this comming September and I've got couple of questions to ask. I need your help!

I'm really interested in both econ and operations research. And while I was looking through the Columbia handbook I've noticed that there actually is a econ-OR major, which would be perfect for me. But the problem is that I'm a SEAS student and the econ-or major is apparently for the cc students. So is transferring to college the only way to take that combined major or will majoring in operations research and minoring in econ be the same? how will thay be different? will I be taking more humanities if i transfer to college and take the econ-OR major?? Will it look 'better' on my transcript to have the econ-OR major rather than having OR as my major and econ minor?

I'm also interested in going to business school(MBA) or law school for grad, I personally think op-econ major or any combination related to this field will be suitable for any of the two grad schools I'm looking for, what are your opinions?

Also, this is a saparate question, but how difficult is it to maintain a good gpa in SEAS (ie. Operations research) compared to cc (ie. econmics) ? cuz I've been hearing that generally it's harder to maintain a good gpa in engineering schools compared to arts/science, is this true for Columbia as well?

any help will be appreciated! I know it's alot of questions but many of you seem to be experts about Columbia so hope you can help out. thanks.

The only difference between doing econ-OR as opposed to OR w/ econ minor is that in CC you will have to go through the CC core while in SEAS you will have to go through (a ridiculously reduced for OR) SEAS core. In CC you will take about 3 times as many humanities classes and will have to take the swim test. In SEAS you take university writing and three other humanities of your chosing with no swim test. For OR, you would be doing a full math requirement but only one semester of general chemistry and a full physics requirement. Also there is gateway which is a terrible class but where it is easy to slack off and get an A with a bit of sucking up....dont get me started on this class. Either will look equally good on your transcript.

For OR majors its quite easy to maintain a good GPA and you will be ridiculed by the rest of the engineering school....i'm sure i'v made my share of IEOR/EMS jokes on this board already.

Also, a piece of advice, try to take lit hum freshman year....it will fullfil the SEAS major cultures requirement and will still keep you on pace if you decide you want to transfer to CC after your freshman year....which would actually be kind of silly since you would have already done most of the science requirements for the OR major anyhow.

thanks shraf those are some useful advices.

any others??
