i'm going for operations research in SEAS

by program you mean major?

I want to do neuroscience and behavior

computer science .. maybe a minor at CC

major and also the program or selection of courses. it was in one of the columbia packets that has the programs which shows what courses you'll be taking in the next 3-4 years.

which packet is this? i must not be familiar with the material.

I am planning on majoring in Engineering and Management systems, probably going to minor in economics with it.

It's probably subject to change, but I'm thinking of majoring in Applied Math. I will definitely minor in music, concentrating as much on jazz as possible. The liberal arts minors (music especially) as an engineering major were one of the biggest selling points for Fu for me, because I am very passionate about jazz.

JZ and Sam: My advice (if others disagree with me, I'd like to hear) is to think about doing a "real" engineering subject rather than OR/IE/EMS. The latter majors are generally seen as more cushy and may not open as many doors for you as a major in EE/MechE/ChemE/etc. would.

I'm considering doing engineering and management systems (not because it's easy, LOL), but I really enjoy both engineering and business.
Do you know any other major for people wanting to do finance later? Thanks for your help.

yea, what sam said lol. since OR is heavy on calc (which is something i really want to study), im sure i can apply it in many professions. i also plan on going graduate business for an mba maybe with columbia.

JZ, all the SEAS majors are heavy on calc. As for getting an MBA, you can major in anything and go to business school. The same is true with med school and law school. Also, you need 2+ years of work experience before you apply to b-school, so your undergraduate major isn't going to be an issue when it comes time to apply to b-school.

Sam, what do you mean by "finance"? Do you mean a quantitative type job on Wall Street? The big bulge bracket banks hire all sorts of SEAS kids. They just look for people who are really smart. They'll train you on the details of finance.

You two really don't have to decide this for another 2+ years, as your 1st/2nd year classes aren't major-specific. As a high school student, you probably don't have much of an clue about the details of the different majors (I know I didn't). Keep an open mind, talk to upper-division students, etc, and you'll learn more about the different majors.

i looked at the program for the 3rd year for OR and EMS, they have those quantatative business courses in that year, which is what i would like to take. as for OR not having a good outlook as many others, that may be true but it really is something that i would like to do as opposed to chem engineering ,electrical, etc.

JZ, it seems that you've given it some thought. Keep your options open, though.

columbia2002, thx 4 the advice :)

i want to do film studies but my parents think that means majoring in unemployment so i might add something else to it....

I thought an majoring in English was majoring in unemployment ...

JUST KIDDING.

lol, majoring in unemployment

Actually, unstirred, one of my friends who majored in film studies is probably the only person I can name who graduated without any plans.

Although I'd love to take Pre Med courses I'll probly end up majoring in Economics

pretty diverse group we got here haha
