Opinions on Academic Renewal?

How do you guys feel about it? Should it only be used in cases where a D/F/NC is inevitable? Has anyone here ever taken a class knowing they could pass with a C but instead failed purposely just to retake it with AR for a better grade?

I might have to use AR for one of my classes. I know I could've done much better if it weren't for my tardies. My professor's really strict about attendance and counts two tardies as an absence, and every two absences account for one letter grade dropped. I know it's my fault, but I could probably pass the class with a C if I did the final.

I'm getting A's in all of my other classes so I'm not too worried about anything else, but this would be my second C on my CC transcript. Now I don't know if I should just purposely fail the course to retake it during summer for a better grade, or just get over with it, never looking back, and take the C.

I'm turned down that the failing grade stays on record even if it doesn't get calculated into the final GPA. My main concern is going to a good grad school (not law or medical fields however), so I'm debating whether or not I should 'compromise' my GPA by taking the C.

Any advice?

Bumping up this thread.

See if such a policy is allowed by your school's guidelines. If it isn't, then you can challenge the policy.

Oh, I'm allowed to, it's just that I don't know if I should go for it or not.

Talk to an academic advisor ASAP.

You can't drop the course can you?

If I drop the course I will have to take an D or an F for the semester. I am already registered to retake the class this summer in case I need to. So I'm 'safe,' but I only have about a week left before my final to decide what's best for me.

My counselors from both CC and UCI told me whatever I choose to do is fine, as long as I get the credit before I transfer to UCI in the fall. The only warning I received was that AR might work 'against' me if I take the failing grade and retake the class with a C--since that's the grade I could be passing with anyway and would thus be a waste of time.

Taking the C = a lower CC cumulative GPA compared to having a permanent D/F on my transcript, but a higher GPA using academic renewal (passing the repeated course with an A/B). I'm not sure what I should be choosing in terms of grad school admission.
