So after finishing a hard final exam today, I told my friend “HEY That was so f*ing hard…” and there happened to be one of my science teacher near my friend. She heard me curse and was very mad and told me to watch my language. like VERY MAD as if she had seen me do something crazy (like bullying a student or something). She even told one of my other teacher that I used bad language after the exam! Isn’t it just ridiculous to tell other teachers of this incident, or is it immature of me to think this is ridiculous? Like I feel like the scolding should have been the end of that, not escalate it by informing my other teachers of it…
I understand cursing is bad, but it was between me and my friend and i wasn’t using it to hurt other students feelings and stuff. Also I hate to use bandwagon appeal but cursing is just so commonplace among teenagers. We all say things that we shouldn’t sometimes and I just find it completely almost inappropriate for her to tell this to other students.
I’ve been too stressed out about this entire day. I don’t know how to confront him when I go back to school tomorrow.
Plus she considers me one of his favorite students and I was planning on asking a letter of recommendation from her next year… UGH
I really don’t get what’s the big deal with cursing. Personally, I don’t mind it from teenagers as yours truly happens to be one. I can’t go a single day in high school without hearing a bad word. The day I do, Trump will be the best president we ever had. Anyways, I think this teacher should’ve minded her own business, yet again it is her job to keep the school “safe”. I would try to make it up to her if you really want that letter of rec, buy her a coffee mug before the last day of school.
In industry, acceptance varies.
Some places you’ll hear a lot of it.
Others will fire you for it.
It’s easier not getting fired (or losing a customer).
There’s a Vonnegut novel where a character says “I don’t swear because it gives people who don’t want to hear an excuse not to listen”
Swearing is unprofessional and school is a semi-professional setting. You wouldn’t walk into a board meeting swearing, or a patient’s room swearing, or a client’s office swearing. The whole point of school is to get you prepared for the real world, and that includes learning how to behave properly. Additionally, not swearing is considered a sign of respect, which you should have for not only your teachers, but your fellow students.
While there are people who swear a lot and places where swearing is commonplace, you will not fail to fit in if you do not curse in those places. Nobody will think less of youif you keep it clean.
On the other hand, there are places where swearing is inappropriate. Many people who find it offensive. Swearing in these situations or with these people will set you apart , and not in a good way. (School, btw, is one of these places.)
There is never an upside to swearing but often a downside. Why take the risk?
It’s not a big deal, they could still sign your recommendation. You could do a lot in schools without negative consequences.
You should watch your language. It reflects your character and you should comport yourself a little better, especially in school and around your teachers.
It’s not a big deal…tons of teachers say watch your language but they expect teenagers to curse.
you said what you said to your friend, not the teacher. i bet no one but your friend was supposed to hear that, so that’s a teacher’s problem if he or she chooses to listen to it
