Hi there I am a senior trying to fill in her college list and finalize my options. NYU is one I have not had the chance to research as much as I'd like to. I am currently tenth in my class of 175 and have a 3.7 unweighted GPA I have taken 6 AP classes and the rest have been honors. 4 years of english, math, lab sciences and language. I am also a varsity swimmer and varsity marching band member. I hold/have held leadership positions in NHS, Tri-M, Marching Band, French Club, Book Club, Tennis, student government and am a black belt karate student of 13 years. Plus MANY more extracurricular activities. I also partake in community service organizations including one I am in charge of for autistic children. I got a 2,110 on my SATs (ew) and am retesting this October for the last time. What are my chances?? And what is this school like pros cons etc? ANything you can tell me I am already in love with New York but I don't want that to be the only reason I go.

you’re a match for NYU. are you aware NYU is not known for its FA? have you run the net price calculators? what have your parents said they’d contribute?

What’s your choice major? I’d say your chances are slim to moderate because of lack of focus in extracurriculars… However your SATs are pretty good, and I’m sure they’ll get better when you retake them. Your GPA is also reasonable for NYU, but again, those extracurriculars are what’s going to hurt you.

PLEASE do your research on NYU–here and elsewhere. Read the NYU Debt Stories (I think that’s what it’s called) on Facebook. Know what you are getting into.

One adjective describes NYU - OVERPRICED

Here we go… " I am already in love with New York ."

You do realize NYU can cost more than $60,000 a year right? That’s including tuition, of course.

Just because you “love New York” doesn’t mean you should spend $200k+ to be there. And yes, as many others before us have said, NYU has mediocre financial aid.

I would have to disagree on NYU Financial Aid. My daughter got into NYU and is doing their Global Liberal Studies program. Her first year is in London (which means it is MORE expensive than NYC), second year will be NYC and her third year can be in Paris, Florence, Madrid, Berlin, Sydney…etc… finally her fourth year will be back in NYC. She received a full scholarship for all tuition ($35,000 +) plus additional financial aid. Our contribution is about $10,000. Then, a week after classes started she received word she received another $4,000 scholarship through NYU. So all in, our tuition, fees, etc. were $70,400 and she received $65,000+ in financial aid. We did a parent PLUS loan for $10,000 and that gave her about $4,000 “extra” to ease into London life. So, at this point, we are $0 out of pocket (except the airline ticket and student VISA fees and our trip to take her to London (which of course was optional).

So, do NOT skip NYU because you THINK it’s expensive. Take the time, fill out your financial aid paperwork PERFECTLY, turn it in on time and then keep looking for supplemental financial aid outside of NYU.

All of our financial aid came from NYU.

Best of luck!
