I'm an incoming UD freshman planning to major with honors in Neuroscience and I'm pre-med. I have 31 credits going in, but most of them were from Chem, Bio, Calc, etc, which I have to retake anyway for pre-med :( I'm also a member of the Honors College, although I'd like to hear anyone's opinion on whether or not graduating with an honors notation benefits you at all in the future. Thanks everyone! :)

I don’t know about your classes… but for Hutton’s general honors notation you have to 21 credits of honors courses, most that won’t pertain to your major. It is also more geared towards, well, general honors. The other option is to do honors in neuroscience which is specific towards your major.
General Honors notation requirements: [GHN Requirements for Students Who Entered the HHC Fall 2005 and After](<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington)
Neuroscience honors: [Undergraduate Resources for the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences](<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington)

Being in Hutton doesn’t require you to work towards the honors notation. You can benefit from their scheduled activities, study abroad scholarships, and access to certain class sections that require Hutton membership, all without working towards the notation.

There really is no downside to being in Hutton. Whether getting the notation is beneficial depends, I suppose, on the career path you take.

Just one opinion, but I would recommend dropping the Psych class and waiting until second semester to take the honors version Psy-106. It counts as 101 and 102 and is much easier and enjoyable overall than the large sections of 101 and 102. I did see that the first semester Psych 106 interferes with other courses you currently have. If you don’t get in for second semester be sure to wait list it. My daughter had a similar number of credits coming in and was wait listed second semester. She ended up getting into the course.

Your schedule seems to be all N and M credits. I know you need a lot given your major, but I would recommend you take an A and H class or a Social Sciences and History course instead of the Psych class. Look for an honors version as they tend to be very small classes and easier grading.

Even if you don’t intend to pursue the Honors notation, take advantage of the Honors courses. (Are there honors versions for Bio or Chem?)

rrah- I’m in the honors Chem class, that’s S117, and I’ve heard it’s incredibly painful so I wanted to take it easy with my other classes. Thank you so much for your advice, that’s incredibly helpful! However, I don’t understand the waitlist process for second semester. Since I don’t pick classes for second semester until later this year, should I assume I’ll get into P106 and drop P101 for now?

With all the credits you have coming in, you will probably get into P106. Registration order is determined by the number of credits you have at the time of registration. Half the class last Spring was sophomores when class started (total credits include what they came into IU with plus those earned during first semester), and you already have sophomore class standing before registering and will probably have 45+ credits at the beginning of Spring semester.

Yes, I would plan on getting into Psy 106 second semester and drop 101. Psy 101 is often a large lecture course that many students take to fulfill N and M credits. Class size is in the 200 plus range. In the past 2 semesters the avg grade is about a C+/B- for many sections. It is higher for the section Vlachos-Weber taught (3.3).

I would drop 101 and wait to get into 106. Even if you are wait listed for the course when you register later in the year for second semester, be sure to sign up for the wait list. That’s how my D ended up in the class. Although the average student GPA is higher in 106, the average grade is higher also (3.8 the most recent semester)

Also, a further bit of advice: don’t be afraid to take more than one honors course at a time. My D and many others here really found the professors to be more approachable and classes smaller. Hutton likes to discourage more than one honors course, but many of D’s friends (in Hutton) take/took two or more with few problems.

I’m also a neuroscience major in the honors college, also doing pre-med. Where are you living shakingandcrying???

I’m taking CHEM-C 117, BIOL 112, CLAS-L (LATIN), and HON-H 235- an honors course on religion and monks.

I’m also a little bit worried about my schedule because I know the importance of keeping a tip top GPA. Does anybody know how hard the HON-H courses tend to be, grading wise?? thanks

About ur psych class, I was told that you dont necessarily have to take a psych course first semester, it helps that we are taking C117 and Bio 112, both of which are requirements for the neuro major. I’m planning on taking PSY-155 next semester, the neuro department sent me an email that this course is VERY good for neuro majors because its an introductory psych course geared towards neuroscience.

Hi there. First post, but I’ve been lurking on the forums of CC for a couple of years now. I’m going to be a freshman at IU this year too. I’m actually in your chem class, shakingandcrying lol. I’m currently pre-med as well and I don’t know if I’ll be majoring in chem, neuro, or both but I was just wondering if anyone else was a little worried about taking CHEM-117 and BIOL-L112 at the same time? I was going to take them separately but if it’s manageable I might see if bio can fit in my schedule.

Have you taken an AP/IB/Honors chemistry class in HS? People I’ve talked to who went through our AP/IB Chem class said S-117 wasn’t too crazy difficult after it. I’m also in that S-117 class this fall and am taking BIOL-L211 tho; so I guess if we drown, we’ll all drown together, lol.

Yeah I took IB Chem HL junior/senior year. Well I guess if S117 isn’t an impossible class I might as well go look up the times that bio is offered lol. Looking forward to seeing you guys in the fall :)
