Are there good solo or chamber group performance opportunities at Penn for a piano player?
And how about musicals and choirs? Do Penn theater groups and singing groups need piano players?
And oboe too...if possible...

Also, is anyone in the Music Performance & Composition residential program @ Rodin? Would you recommend this to a freshman, or should I just go dorm in the Quad/Hill/Kings Court for the frosh experience?

Thank you!

Maybe try taking a look around on this website: Performing Arts Council

I have a few friends in the Music program at Rodin. I mean, it depends on what kind of living arrangements you want. Their floor is pretty quiet; I don't know whether they're the only freshmen on the floor or whether there are other freshmen rooms, but it will definitely be a very different experience than living somewhere like the Quad or Hill. The pro is that you get a kitchen/living room/bathroom for the same price as a room in the Quad/Hill. The downside is that the floor will be less social and you'll have to go more out of your way to meet other freshmen.

The musicians are pretty mediocre at Penn and, frankly, you would have to create your own performance opportunities unless you played oboe in symphony or wind ensemble. There are many string chamber groups, but few (if any) piano trios/quartets/quintets or wind groups. I guess the question is, how well do you play?

CDN_dancer, thanks for that site!

wayward_trojan,
piano - i think maybe good enough to get into a decent-ish/pretty good conservatory? i played at carnegie hall and won competitions and stuff. the only problem with my playing is that i have small hands, so i can't exactly play the intro to rach 2 ;)
oboe - i'm decent, but i'm nowhere near as good as i am on piano. i'm probably going to try out for the orchestra just for kicks.
flute - about as good as i am on oboe. maybe i'll join the penn band :)

i'm hopefully/probably going to be on the same level as most musicians there. all i want are opportunities to play and continue with performance (the better the musicians are, the happier i'll be though) with good/decent groups.

thanks guys!
