Optional Essay

Middlebury gives the option of an "additional information" section. Do you think that an application would be stronger with it? Or should I not use it unless I have extenuating circumstances?

I was told only to write something if I had some serious problem in my common app I needed to explain. I think you should be fine without it!

I have no idea how it all works with the new common App… so not sure if you can upload info anymore. But is where S uploaded his resume since the fill in the blank wasn’t adequate sorta kinda. But I definitely would not write unless you have something very specific to say about unusual circumstances that aren’t being addressed elsewhere in the application.

This is very confusing – because the new Common App already has a new place called “Additional Information” where you are to list any unusual circumstances, clarify/elaborate on any ECs, etc.

I assumed the Middlebury supplemental question was more of an “elaborate on anything you wish to” type of supplemental question – NOT a repeat of the common app addt’l info. Basically like a “choose your own topic” supplemental as long as it is under 300?? words.

Thoughts?

Can anyone who has applied ED clarify? On the Middlebury website, they reference the supplemental by stating that applicants have "…the ability to write a short statement that is specific to Middlebury College and the ability to upload a document (a resume, for instance). " But on the Common Application, the wording is simply “Please feel free to briefly share with us anything you would like us to know that is not otherwise covered in the Common Application.” These are two very different things – one is more of a “why Middlebury”. Help!

^^^Why not go directly to the source and call the admissions office???

Because it is the holiday weekend and they are closed. We tried on Saturday. My D wanted to finish the app this weekend… so we were hoping that someone else who had applied ED had already figured out the answer… thank you anyway. She will just have to wait until Tuesday to call M.

I think that an applicant could very easily write a supplemental that fits both descriptions. For instance, a paragraph or two on why the applicant would be a good match for Middlebury. That would be specific to Middlebury, and might potentially share something that has not been otherwise covered in the Common App.

MiddKidd - you always have thoughtful answers, thank you! My daughter wrote a paragraph today about why she felt Middlebury was an ideal choice for her (and her for Middlebury). It adds a bit that isn’t in her Common App and is specific to Middlebury. So that even if it is “more” than what they originally intended, it can’t hurt her.
