Organic Chemistry - Please Help! (AP Chem. Student)

Hey guys,

If you were enrolled in AP Chemistry this year, congratulations! We reached the end! My chemistry teacher is still teaching us, though. I have a test on organic chemistry this upcoming Thursday and I am in DESPERATE NEED OF HELP! This is going to be the last grade of the marking period. Right now, I have a B-; however, my average in the class is a C+. My goal is to have an final grade of the course be a B-, but the only way I can achieve this goal is to pass the test with a score above a 75.

If you are a master at organic chemistry or took AP Chemistry in the past, what are ways to make learning organic chemistry simple? By this, I mean are there any tricks you use? Any tips? Any resources I could benefit from? Thanks so much to those that reply!

Btw, I have 5 extra credit points for this test.

What are you covering in your class? Tbh the majority of the Orgo I learned in high school was naming, which there are no tricks for.

@bodangles

We’re naming alkenes, alkanes, and alkynes, as well as cycloalkanes and bicyclic compounds. We’re also learning about chirality!

Naming is a lot of memorization combined with a bit of practice to learn how to utilize the knowledge. I made flash cards mostly. Maybe you can create your own little tricks for memorizing, stuff that works for your own brain, like mnemonics.

Yikes, chirality continues to trip up some of the people in my sophomore-year college chemistry class to this day. For that I’d just find a ton of resources to see which way of learning the topic clicks with you. Lots of people make chemistry videos, and you probably have a textbook or can find websites or other books that explain it online.

@bodangles

I created a list of all of the names as well as a quizlet! Even though the AP Chemistry exam is over, I kept my Barron’s textbook, and I’m reading the orgo chapter. I’m also watching Khan Academy videos my teacher recommended on orgo, specifically alkanes, and they have been helping me a lot! On the other hand, chirality literally hurts my brain, lol. I will go on a quest for tutorials, though.

Thanks a lot!
